Scary Movie Octoberfest Halloween-a-thon

It's no secret that I was born on Halloween (Even though you probably didn't know that ), and because of that I have always been a bit of a scary movie buff. Since it is almost that time of year again, a time for ghouly delights I thought I would do a bit of something to help build up to my birthday and put everyone into a Halloween mood...

A thread about scary movies!

My plans are to watch every scary movie we get in at my work (I work at a Blockbuster Video) and hopefully talk about it here. There will be no spoilers, but I will give a hey or a nay on whether it was a good watch.

Now, the last few years have been, in my opinion of course, very barren in the area of quality scares. Cheap thrills, where Hollywood thinks gore=scary and half assed slasher remakes have been the name of the game.

Now imagine my surprise when I saw Trick 'r Treat.

Hands down a 10/10-omgwtfbbq-you-gotta-watch-every-year-like-it's-suddenly-the-It's-A-Wonderful-Life-of-Halloween.

I won't talk about its plot other than to say its a masterfully done piece of horror cinema with a complex look at a single night gone screwy from 4 perspectives with one major thing tying them all together, the ever present and sinisterly cute Sam.

I also am not ashamed to say that I hunger for a Sam plushie to put on my desk.

Excellent production values, recognizable actors, pleasantly competent acting, and very little CG that I could detect this movie isn't B grade at all in the least.

I would have watched this movie in a theater and walked out feeling like I had just gotten more than my money's worth, even with the overpriced candy.

So this movie comes out on the 6th, and you should totally watch it.

Yeah, I've been wanting to see this. I always watch a horror film on Halloween, and I think I'll rock Trick 'r Treat this year. Looks so good.

And if you think we haven't had any good horror recently, go watch Drag Me to Hell. Then watch it again after the adrenaline rush has gone down.

I will free admit that I am not a big fan of gore and such, so modern horror films aren't really my thing. I do, however, enjoy older scary movies...both those that are actually kinda scary and those that are just flat out cheesy.

The Haunting is very suspenseful for an old movie. Part where Toastburner spoils a partthe thumping/knocking moves up and down the hall is especially tense...it freaked out my older sisters. The Changeling is a "newer" film, but also very suspenseful...well...mostly.

For cheesy old horror flicks, I recommend Them!, The Thing From Another World (and if you don't mind gore, I would recommend the 1982 remake as well. I'm not sure I'd watch it again, but it was worth watching once), and, of course, The Blob (most cheery song about a carnivorous pile of jello ever).

Revival of this thread to discuss Paranormal Activity. A low-budget, Blair Witch-esque type film. Everything I hear about it is that it's exceptionally scary and I'm going with a bunch of friends to see it this weekend. I encourage you others to view it as well.

Haven't seen it myself, but I've heard good things about it. Two people on another forum I go to said that they slept with the lights on after they saw it.

I'll second The Haunting. It's a classic, and it's absolutely fantastic.

If your Blockbuster has a decent foeiegn film section, I recommend The Kingdom-- a very creepy, suspenseful miniseries about a haunted hospital. Steven King took it and made his own version a few years ago, but you can't beat the original.

El orfanato was a well done ghost story with near-perfect atmosphere and doesn't resort to cheap "jumps". Probably one of my favorite scary movies to come out this decade. If you haven't seen it you should consider it.
