Default Speakers not playing sounds

So my laptop speakers have suddenly stopped playing sounds, sometime between this morning and tonight, when I wasn't doing anything so no settings should have changed.
Running through device manager there are no problems with my soundcard- I've updated the drivers but nothing.
The speakers are the default playback but when I go into their properties and hit test it gives me a message "unable to play test tone". I've tried restarting windows audio, disabling sound effects under speaker enhancements and changing the default format around, none of which seems to work.
I've never really seen a problem like this before-any ideas?

Default It's a start. Then diagnose.

Well, while perhaps not immediately helpful, I'd recommend plugging in headphones or external speakers to make sure your sound is working before being sure it's the speakers themselves.

It seems the speakers are broken. My cousin had a similar / the same problem with her laptop I tried some things but couldn't figure out any problem besides hearing nothing. She ended up sending the thing in to get it repaired.
I'm not really that tech savvy but this is what I know.

I assume the speakers aren't muted or anything.

Yeah this is the sensible thing but all my speakers at are work, I was going to try this tommorowbut was wondering if someonee had a magical fix now. I guess I should be patient but watching my extreme animal porn isn't the same without sound.

Start - Right-click My Computer - Manage - Device Manager - What do you see? Anything with a yellow exclamation point?

EDIT: Sorry I didn't read your whole thing. Could be your sound card?

Sound card checks out according to the device manager and I've reinstalled the drivers and everything. It was working this morning so it seems strange. I may have to open it up to have a look but while I build computer for a good chunk of my job I've never openned a laptop so I don't know how easy it will be inside there.
Any tips? Is it pretty much the same as a regular PC just smaller?

Yes and no. A lot of your stuff is going to be onboard and not designed to be changed. I've never upgraded anything on a laptop besides the RAM and the HDD. I know the NIC can be changed without much problem, but I haven't really gotten much further than that. I do know a lot of the stuff in laptops is top-accessible only. You have to totally take the damn thing apart to even look it it.

Have you tried plugging in headphones?

EDIT: Oh, my buddy had a similar problem the other day. His showed up in dev manager though. I installed a new driver, nothing. Turned out to be a symptom of a failing hard drive. I still suspect yours is a card though.
