Serious Sony Walkman is empty but also half full

So, my mother has a Sony Walkman, and when she connects it to her Mac and deletes songs, it gets rid of the songs, but doesn't free up any space. We tried it by hooking it up to my PC, and getting rid of songs does free up space that way.

Right now, we've deleted all the songs on it, but it's still got about a gigabyte of space taken up... by seemingly nothing. I don't really know how I can free up space that doesn't seem to be taken up by anything. Any ideas on how to rectify this problem, as well as what the cause might be, would be appreciated.

Simple solution: sell the mac
you can also try resting or formatting the Walkman from the WM settings menu

In a windows PC, go to control panel-->folder options and set it so you can see hidden and system files. I'm thinking the Mac didn't delete anything, and just sent everything to some sort of Mac recycle bin. You could just format it after checking for anything weird.
