Default A/V Help

Ok, I have an HDTV, about 8 months ago the speakers randomly stopped working (Never went over half volume, was watching an episode of Castle and counting coinage when they got borked. Guess they hated Nathan Fillion.)

TV was not in warranty when this happened, so I have been kinda limping along using headphones from my PC since I use the TV as a monitor.

Well, I have a PS3. I have been running the picture and sound through my PC via a capture card and just playing it there. No HD, but not really a big thing with the games I have been playing.

HOWEVER. Batman: Arkham City is coming out and I want my HD for that.

So basically, I want my picture to come out of my TV, but the sound to come out of a set of secondary speakers, while connected to an HDMI cable.

WHAT DO I NEED?

Just did the same thing; I bought an AV receiver with HDMI 1.4. Haven't had a chance to set it up yet (oh god so fucking busy), but it should let me connect my PS3 to the receiver, my TV to the receiver, and just fucking work.

EDIT: And speakers. You need speakers.

Default Sadly I just have large, loud stereo speakers. But man are they loud.

Typically, you use the audio out of the television to send that signal to your speaker setup, disable the television's own audio and/or set the television to use the external speakers instead of its own [my television, for example, automatically does the latter when you turn off its own speakers, but I am sure it varies by model or brand], and turn on your speaker setup with it set to the input from the television.

The actual details of these steps will depend on the model of the television, the speakers/receiver, and the available outputs and inputs.

Alternatively, you may have a setup with a nice receiver that has everything plug into it first before passing along video to the television, in which case you'd select the appropriate input for the sound from your PS3 and just make sure the video gets to the television (likely still turning off the TV's speakers so they don't try to do anything).

EVILNess did you figure this out or did you still need a hand? What type of TV do you have?

Also, I'm going to be the tech-support douche but did you try to restore your tv's default settings to get your sound back? Or were you able to legitimately confirm that the speakers are for-real dead?

TV

If the tail end of your speaker cables look like standard male red and white A/V cords then you're in luck.

If it's just the single plug then you need an adapter.

I know, right? My surround setup on my computer needs a small chip in the amp replaced, but it's been on back order for two months now. I am not liking being reduced to my headphones all the time.
