How are you still not understanding this. Being priviledged doesn't make you an asshole it makes you fucking oblivious to the suffering other people go through routinely because it's something you never have to deal with in a personal manner and also because society in general filters that shit out. You don't ever see stuff about trans issue in the news unless its a really really big news item because of big parades/protests or on the side of oppression because of a person being murdered.

I was going to try to split the on-topic parts of this thread from all the chaff, to keep it going since it's certainly an issue folks want to support (at the very least it's something Liz has put some effort into and I don't want that to fizzle out here).

But then there's most of the posts.

I am going to over-simplify a bit -- if you think it's totally rad to be active about trying to help out oppressed peoples and to try to stop objectification and the promotion of negative stereotypes, get on board.

If you'd rather spend your time in this thread going on about how you're offended 'cause you can't seem to figure out that using phrases like "heterosexual male gaze" and "privilege" to discuss the issue doesn't automatically make it about you, please take more time to consider your choice to respond to the thread.

I don't disagree that said, my point is that under the current rules no rule is being broken ergo there is no reason for moderation.

I just want to make the point that privilege encompasses that overall benefits you get from society, the fact that issues don't *directly* hurt you, and that you set the terms of your own involvement.

Privileged people who self-identify as allies regularly do that last one and try to dictate the ways in which oppressed groups should operate. "I'm on your side, but you should be nicer." "I'm on your side, but you aren't using the words I want you to." "I'm on your side, but you need to educate me because I refuse to take the effort to do that myself."

It's rather tiresome.

As for Pip Boy's evolutionary psychology nonsense: Most evolutionary psychology is nonsense. Even were it correct, it wouldn't change the facts that Atlus is doing shitty stuff that they should not be doing and that people should stop giving them the financial support that allows them to do these shitty things.

As for every single person who brings up, "Well what about all these other companies?" The actions of other companies do not excuse the actions of Atlus. If you are genuinely bothered by these other companies, you do not need me to tell you to not support them. If you're just bringing them up to deflect and excuse Atlus' behavior, then you're pretty clearly just being an asshole.

If your complaint is I haven't provided enough examples, I've got plenty more. I'm pacing them on the Tumblr so that people who search the relevant tags on Tumblr will run into the Boycott Atlus campaign often. It's not realistic for me to try and update the Tumblr with every single example of Atlus being fucked up in a day or two, and were I to try it would soon be lost to the distant archives of Tumblr.

This is one of the fundamental flaws of your strategy. If you're trying to actively promote something, it IS your job to educate people about it. Simply acting like you can mention something and have everyone else in the world go do research on it simply because you told them to makes you seem like the one that feels entitled. The effectiveness of a boycott stems from how many people are percieved to be participating in it, so if you go and shout baseless accusations of misogyny and bigotry at everyone who doesn't immediately go all in just because 'you said so' is going to hurt your case.

I'll call the American civil rights revolution in as an example. Martin Luther King Jr. didn't get the support he needed by saying "Yall crackas need to step off". He got it by making concise and rational cases about the injustice being done to American blacks. You can take this as some entitled asshole telling you what to do if thats just REAAAALLY how you feel like spinning it, but at least from my point of view its a piece of historical evidence to show you that a small revision of your strategy might help your campaign.
