And sorry if you got the impression that I meant run in an extended chase. I meant flat-out sprint, find cover, and call 911. |

You are honestly suggesting that a man who is confronted by a robber in his own home should run away "like a little girl" (your own words), and leave his family behind? And you say that *I* have a disregard for life? Look in the mirror, buddy. You don't abandon your family when they are in harm's way.

I'm kind of operating on the assumption that you'll be alone. If you're families there, not great, but barricade yourselves in a room and call the police.
And I almost died once trying to protect someone who wasn't even my own family, so I would appreciate it if you didn't put words into my mouth. |

Yes, anecdotal evidence, the epitome of gun control debate.
Hey Bookworm, next time I'm getting robbed or raped, I'm totally just going to run away or totally disarm the dude, because these are totally realistic options, and I'll be sure to remember these enlightening self defense pointers. "Disarm him" and "Run away" are so horribly vague that it's honestly just laughable. I don't think I'm strong enough to up and break someone's finger, much less when I'm in the obvious emotional panic that the average citizen is. You can go off saying that a citizen is too psychologically unsound to use a gun in a high-pressure situation. What makes you think they can competently disarm someone? Or run away in this precise zigzag pattern when the guy has a gun that can pretty much out pace them?

Said option is also leaving your family behind while someone who is, yes, potentially a crazy ass burglar who could, by all intentions, be there just to shoot your family up. Other options are not necessarily reasonable or safe options when you include the fact that other people are in danger.

Can we get into a discussion of self-defense later? Suffice to say that I weigh about two-hundred and ten, stand about 6'1 and I know a girl that's half my size that could kick my ass without even trying. And the finger-breaking involves yanking the gun upwards. As someone who's broken their finger several times during TKD, lemme tell you, they're really fragile. And you are under stress, yes. The entire point of practice, which as I'm sure someone in the military could tell you, is to instill it in you to the point where it's fairly instinctive. EDIT: And Seil's right. The best self-defense is trying to make sure that it never happens. |

But Bookworm, killing them with a gun is just so much more conveinient. All I have to do is pull this handy little trigger, and hell I don't have to go to these classes in the evenings or weekends or anything! It's like the Matrix, instant self-defense! Except less people die overall, and there's less robots.

Az: Way out of line. You're very very very warned. You should know better than to pull shit like that.
Book: Seriously, if you can't be more serious than this in discussions in the future, don't come into them. Your entire arguement's been a joke, which, up until now, I've been trying to put up with seriously, but shit, I'm closing the thread and kinda pissed off about Azi already, so... stop with the ridiculous hypotheticals. Stop with the 'everyone should be trained to defend themselves'. Just stop. While I'm at it: Quote:
Second--didn't we already go over how goddamn stupid this whole 'avoid every threatening situation' idea is in the rape thread? Next time I see it from anyone I'm just gonna ban them. Screw it. It's ridiculous, unrealistic, and is a great way to defer blame to the victim. Adamark: Quote:
So: Final count... Warnings: 1 Seriously, don't do this again, but you aren't actually warned: 3 Thread: Closed.
