The reported crime rate is lower, at any rate. In South Korea the violent crime rate is much lower than in the states, however the police are by and large incompetent (all my evidence is anecdotal, as I haven't heard of any actual studies into the beast). That, combined with the stigma for reporting things like sexual assault or gang crime means that things aren't as out there as they would be in places with a half way decent police atmosphere.

Nevermind that I had to stand by, in my OWN house, while some burglar tore the fuckin place up, and I couldn't do a damn thing to stop him except dial a stupid telephone because all I had was an improvised weapon which he easily could have trumped. I'm just soooo fortunate, I should just feel privileged that Mr. Robber played nice and didn't whip out a gun on me and shoot because I picked up the phone.

Dude. It was direct sarcasm in response to something you directly stated.

He was responding to the fact that it was "apparently" impossible to defend yourself without a gun.
