Although my opinions may be obvious on this matter, I say we keep the rep system. I know I'm biased on this issue, but doesn't everyone else feel a little swell of pride when someone gives them a positive rep point? It's like a form of Virtual Hug on the Forums. It also can be a matter of private pride as well.
Now, I admit I have abused the Rep system myself, and will steer clear of it from now on. But I have a question; (to which the answer may be obvious) is it alright to give negative rep for a violation of the rules, such as Thread Necromancy? I admittedly hit a triad of Necromancers the other day, and was wondering if I had been in the wrong?

As stated, it's alright as long as it isn't being done merely because of dislike or for reasons of anonymous flaming. Negative rep is tehre if someone does something bad, acts like a jackass on the forums ori s otherwise disrputive. But not just because you think they are dumb and so you flame them with unsigned rep.
Hell, it could go for positive rep too. The point is the flaming, not the negative. Rep can be anonymous and we don't want people abusing that anonymity.

NOOO! I only have 5 PMs! (PMs, not PMS.) Meister, you ruined the good day you gave me back around Episode 457. (Yeah, wrap your head around THAT!)
Anyways, I'm kinda pro-rep myself. Rep, ultimately, is nothing. That's what makes it so great. You can indulge in good feelings for a boost in your rep (as I have done below), but shake off a negarep. "Bah, it's just reputation." It's the closest thing we have to money on these forums -- what's that, Arlia Janet finally made my avatar work? Rep boost! Anyways, isn't Negarep inherently flaming? Think about it. It's even got that bright red color, not that I'd know. The fact that it's called "reputation" throws another curve into it. Is this high school now? Are we a bunch of adolescent girls spreading gossip in the locker room? If we assume it works the way reality rep works, it gets a lot more abstract. I'm getting confused about what I stand for and what I'm trying to prove, so I'll shut up now. Those're my two cents anyway.

There really isn't too much of the 'holding it over people' but I can see it happening in the future the way things are going.

Anyone notice that a few months ago the top person had maybe 30 rep if he was lucky? Then there was a few thread asking about what rep was and how much you gave according to post count and rep got thrown around like free candy. It kind of grew from that. I'm pretty sure we have people in the 130 to 200 range, not exactly sure but I wouldn't be surprised if shiney was getting up there towards 200, if not then it won't be long before he is up that high or someone else. That's an increase of about 6 to 7 times what it used to be. Not that this is bad but maybe we should reevaluate our use of postive rep unless of course those people somehow suddenly started posting extermly good posts out of nowhere. (Some of them actually earned it with poetry in the 5 minute poetry thread but I'm not 100% on were others are getting it from.)

It's that people actually started using it. Most of my rep has to do with something I said to someone, a closing of a post, whatever. Things people liked that were forum-related. Etc.
*shrugs* Why is everyone discussing rep so deeply? Does this affect people more than i was aware? This is certainly an outcome I was not expecting.

Rep is good. It's there. Use it or don't use it. Simple.
