John's not good at dealing with his problems and has a natural tendency to ignore the bad and maintain an upbeat, playful attitude regardless of what life throws at him. And, on his 13th birthday, life threw basically every awful thing it could at him after otherwise living a fairly idyllic suburban existence. He and everyone he knows has died at least once, and the only parent he's ever had died permanently. And he kept a stiff upper lip the whole time.

Now he's spent the past two years cut off from most everyone he's ever cared about, with only Jade and Davesprite to truly keep him company, and he's been playing third wheel to them, as well as all the sticky issues of Davesprite being Dave but also not quite being the same Dave being something that John has been very intent on not thinking about at all. Nannasprite's there but, despite the blood relation, she's not someone he ever knew before and, if the past couple intermissions are any indication, she's done little more than bombard him with pranks and baked goods for the entire duration. The consorts, Prospitians, Dersites, and imps are mostly just wacky idiots that don't provide any truly fulfilling company. And, on top of all that, he's been spending the past two years taking care of Rose's fucking cat.

So he's become understandably bitter, but he's not opening up and actually dealing with any of his problems because it's not in his nature to do so and is instead redirecting his bitterness towards anything that subtly reminds him of any of it, which has apparently been everything. In this instance, it was Con Air, which has been something John previously looked upon as a parallel to his own adventure, and therefore in his mind has become sort of symbolic of all the shit he's been through and how dissatisfying it's all become now.

Also he's 15 years old and nobody is particularly pleasant at that age.
