I mean, Vriska had hers from a really young age. I'm actually pretty curious as to what they represent.

Karkat is the bridge of the hemospectrum so he could either be awfully low, an actual crab, or spectacularly high, Emperor Fuckawesome.

The trolls could've been branded with the horoscope symbols at birth for all we know.

I'm just having trouble figuring out how Karkat could maintain his secrecy, Troll society being what it is and all.

And it can't be an actual crab. Karkat remembers 12 other wigglers.

Pretty sure the signs aren't in any way meaningful. It's just an identifying mark. The closest thing to a meaningful sign is Dave's shirt becoming a broken record.

Oh wait, the marks are just astrology symbols; sygnifying their birth date and all.

Troll culture just happens to have 48 instead of 12.

I think it was mentioned that Karkat's blood isn't actually on the hemospectrum.

So this may mean that he came up with his symbol some other way.

EDIT: Although maybe they were referring to the gray he uses.

I'm still kind of hoping that karkat's ancestor turns out to be Troll Malcolm X, or possibly Troll Spartacus.

Classes are defined by location on the hemospectrum. That means each colour of blood has an alphabet specific to it.

Candy red being a mutant colour, Karkat would presumably have none of the "normal" alphabets to draw from.

The issue with that is that Karkat is outside the hemospectrum. Why would a huge alpha8et of signs exist for a classless mutant, especially since they are likely culled on discovery?

He (or his ancestor, rather) likely stole his/their sign from another class.
