How does it work with just wearing them? It never really made much sense from the start.

edit: voice seems likely though, as Sollux had some sort of radio walkie-talkie thing that he talked to Terezi with over Trollian.

I always thought when he was wearing the shades, It was kind of like seeing through them, but could be turned on and was kind of like looking at a desktop, with your eyes being the mouse, and your thoughts typing.

That's probably just me though :/

I think in [S] Jade: Wake up was the first time we saw Dave's eyes sans shades. I don't remember anything earlier than that where we get a glimpse at his eyes.
