Just as a note, Andrew would be completely aware of the fact that meteors would probably cause mushroom clouds. He's a bit of a physics geek.

Also, as I stated out, this is a game construct, and one we don't know yet. They all could have been this big, but beyond the graphical rendering range of outside observers.
Also, remind me never to enter into speculation on webcomics again, no matter how silly I am trying to be. My sarcastic sardonicism will go unappreciated by the serious discussions. :`( I am sad now. I'm gonna go cry into my milk. Meanies.

So maybe both John and his father are dead? I wouldn't be shocked now if the storyline picked up with John's three friends, years after the fact, trying to pick up the pieces after the disaster or something.
