Random question: Is it clear yet who set up the giant pile of madness that is Sburb/Sgrub? Marketing the 'game', setting up the lab facilities, with machines locked to the players lives, etc., etc.

I know it has big lofty goals, but what's keeping the machine oiled down on these mundane levels?

We don't know how the original game was created, but Sollux created Sgrub based on technology found in a Frog Temple/ruins while Sburb seems to have been a product of Skaia Labs. More to the point, however, it seems that the game is created as part of each universe upon the latter's creation in a previous game session - e.g. Skaia Labs was created as part of the kids' universe during the trolls' session [shown in that one episode with all the trolls hangin' out in front of the Sgrub logo with a door, about to claim their reward -- the new universe (the kids') for them to live in as their world was destroyed], and thus has the same kind of logos and things as their game client and the technology found in the labs in their Veil. Also perhaps worth a read/skim.

Also perhaps related is the code for Lord English's appearance, a mere formality due to time shenanigans.
