I'm surprised that no-one's speculated on the big even that made Tavros sleep off his misery. Vriska was obviously involved, and, apparently, he had some sort of chance. I have no idea what it is, though. Probably not communing-related, and probably happened after the Aradia-Vriska fight. Any ideas?

My guess is it was the Aradia-Vriska fight. He just watched as Aradia beat Vriska to death, and it's possible he didn't even know about the Extra Life yet--either way, that's bound to leave him feeling pretty awful.

Vriska seems to think she had an active role in whatever happened, though.
And besides, I don't think that fight would affect him strongly. To begin with, he really couldn't do anything but watch. And he did interrupt Aradia's assault and get her to back off.

Besides, why'd he feel awful about Vriska getting hurt in revenge for killing someone?

Yeah I'm of the opinion that it was Aradia killing Vriska. She probably became all hostile to him again afterwords because he was too pathetic to intervene.

The Hook, Chain and Handle are all metaphorical objects and thus what can or can't be done to them should best be viewed within the context of the metaphor they represent.

Being off the Hook/Chain is a state of being, The Hook/Chain representing both artificial involvement in one's behavior, and an unwanted amount of restraint, the imagery here is of being bound or unnecessarily attached to something. Being "off" the chain/hook signifies not having these restraints or attachments and being "free" . In this context it is not appropriate to say "He flew off the chain" because he is BOUND by the chains, thus, the closest thing would be "He flew out of the chains/ He broke the chains"

"flying off the handle" is an action. Things which have handles have them by design. When the handle Breaks or "flys" off, The object which had it generally doesn't work anymore, or no longer works to it's full capacity.
This is connected to the idea of "having a handle on things" When someone flies off of the more general "handle" they are therefore losing their composure, their reason, and their understanding.

Both of these concepts sound very similar, but there's a key difference.
Being "off the hook/Chain" is generally a positive thing, representing coolness, and open-ness. To be "off the hook/chain" is to be unfettered by arbitrary societal rules or boundaries to access a truer form of enjoyment or artistry.

"Flying off the hook" on the other hand represents losing ALL control, both good and bad, and "going crazy" the handle represents the "mind" that one "looses" when the action is taken, and very specifically, represents the moment at which this drastic change takes place.
