Actually, I dare say that the sword-crow looks like a second phase prototyping. First phase looks like a head (the harlequin face with arm, Jasper's head), while the second phase is the full ghost-like aparition (Nanaquin, Lady Jasperthulhu), so the Sword Crow seen there is likely the fully prototyped kernel sprite. Maybe S'burb considers the sword and the crow to be seperate items, and thus completes the prototyping with the one step.

The first phase harlequin kernelsprite was a ghostly apparition as well.

Besides, the formula for tier 2 kernelsprite prototyping so far involves is something dead + a doll. John's was Nana's Ashes + Harlequin Doll, Rose's was Jasper's corpse + Eldritch Princess Doll, and Dave's is already know to be part dead crow with Li'l Cal sitting right there with them. Seems pretty open and shut.

Actually, that's only after it divided after entering The Medium. I think, since WV was locked out of that terminal, the reception was fuzzy, and the color was still red tinted (as if illuminated by a burning city), it could be reasonably assumed that at that point Dave was not in The Medium yet.

In short, I think outside The Medium, the first-step prototyped kernel sprite is only the head.

Andrew Hussie implied in a Q&A session that the prototyping was literally Anything + Anything. Just because we've seen a pattern in the two we've seen and confirmed to be fully prototyped thus far does not mean that is how it must be.

So I just kicked down that shut door of yours and left it wiiiiiiiiiide open.

Hmm, on second glimpse, Dave's kernelsprite is lacking the pre-Medium split aura seen in the other two sprites, so...

Well, of course they probably did, but would have not doing it allowed for the double whammy of reference to Problem Slueth and reference to John's game of 52-pickup? I think not.
