Pedos and the Law

Okay, there are a couple legal issues involving pedophilia in one way or another that have been bothering me.

First: I don't know if it's true, because I can't find the source, but I heard that a woman was sent to jail for taking pictures of one or more of her kids taking a bath or something, because it was supposedly a form of child porn. If it's true, then I'm sure tons of parents could be sent to prison for child porn, just for taking innocent family photos. Another example of when the law goes a little farther than it should.

No. As much as it may have creeped out and otherwise angered people, he technically hadn't done anything wrong. However, even though he hadn't broken any laws, they were still able to put a restraining order in effect that made it illegal for him to get within thirty feet of a minor. So, a guy who has no house and no one else to pick up groceries for him and the like, can't be within 30 feet of anyone seventeen or younger? If I went to places where there were going to be adult females, and took regular, non-innappropriate pictures, then posted them on a site, no one would think twice about it. But because they are of little girls, everyone freaks out. I understand a parent's paranoid mentality, but he didn't do anything but be creepy. Furthermore, that newscast from the "unbiased" media was so biased it was sad.

They basically went out of their way to ruin this guy's life, because he had a different sexual preference that he didn't act on. That would be similar to beating up a person for being gay, even if he didn't act on it. I know pedophilia is very frowned upon in society, but don't you think these people are taking it a bit too far?

for your first, usually the photo has to be sexualized in some way. However, that's very subjective and open to interpretation by the judge and/or jury.

For second, in some ways I agree with you on this guy. According to the story he's not a pedophile, he's a voyeur that happens to like little girls.

On the other hand, I can understand the reaction. It's a preventive measure, if nothing else. All paraphilias are escalating in nature and impossible to 'cure'. It's not as if he were jailed for breaking the law. He was merely restrained from being in a position where he could possibly harm someone, for which there is a high risk. Then he was arrested for violating that restraint.

Actually, he is a pedophile. Like many others, you use the term pedophile to describe someone who sexually molests children. That is a child molester. Just as a bibliophile isn't someone who molests books, a pedophile is someone who finds children attractive or at least has a more than average liking, and does not necessarilly act on it.

I understand preventitave measures, I have nothing wrong with that. Somehow though, this one tastes different. He hadn't previously acted on his attraction other than taking pictures and going to places where he could take pictures.

On the subject of curing pedophilia: There are those who believe that pedophilia is just a preference, like being hetero- or homo-sexual. In fact, pedophilia would have been much better accepted than homosexuality hundreds of years ago.

Seems my definition was a bit off. I had been under the impression that to be diagnosed as a pedophile he would have had to have sought out some form of relationship with a child, sexual or otherwise. Having brushed up on it a bit, it seems that fantasies and urges constitute.

I put 'cure' like that because not only is it impossible to cure in a medical sense because it's a disorder, not a disease, but also because paraphilias are hard to impossible to treat and see a reduction in symptoms.

And yeah, there are those who believe pedophilia is an orientation by itself, but to me the evidence for that just isn't there. The stronger theory is that for whatever reasons the pedophile feels they can't have a successful relationship with another adult, so they instead attempt to form a relationship with a child so they have all the control and power in the relationship.

I actually went to a site frequented by pedophiles, no this was not a child porn site, and asked why they were attracted to kids. I was trying to start a discussion on it in another site and wanted references I could quote. They gave reasons like they were attracted to the innocence, some said that the age they were attracted to didn't age with them, as well as some others I can't remember. Generally, pedophiles seem to either just find teens and preteens more sexually attractive, or they find certain idealized traits appealling.
