Find a router for my mom's friend.

I just got off the phone with her and she's looking for a new router. Her current one is old as dirt and its performance is suffering, apparently. She currently has a separate modem box, so I'm hoping to get her something that'll replace both of them. She pointed me to this thing: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...IN#detailspecs

Would this have a modem built in? Networking isn't my forte. If it doesn't, can someone recommend a good one with N for the same price or less?

No, it is just a router.

But why would you want them combined into one device, anyway?

Also, is this a DSL connection or a cable connection? If it is the latter, I am not currently aware of modem+router combination devices, at least in the home market.

Right, there are plenty standalones that work just fine as an external device to the modem, but while there are plenty DSL/router combos, there are none for cable.

I think she has Charter, she said. So probably cable, I guess. Well, would her modem be holding her back at all, then?

Short answer, no.

Long answer, probably not. Do a spees test; if it can hit your max speed, it's good. If not, call your ISP and ask why (this got me a new modem and a fivefold increase in speed).
