Soundtracks. Movie, Videogame, life.
Lemme break it down for you... I do a lot of writing after work, and when I write I like to listen to music. Problem is I can't listen to anything with lyrics because it's distracting. So I listen to instrumental stuff, mostly soundtracks and movie scores because they are the easiest to find in large quantities. But I'm getting kinda bored rehashing the same shit that I always listen to ad nausea. So, what's good out there? Right now I'm listening to quite possibly the BEST video game sound track
Uprising! Very great, underrated game. Also, I've got the Conan and Advent Children soundtracks loaded as well, but that's about it.

Just because it's about a third of the music I listen to at this point, I'll list some of my favorites from video games.
Metroid- The Prime series especially has some nice music, probably just due to being orchestrated/bigger. Overall the music from the series is awesome. Mass Effect- Not as big of an oomph as some other examples, but still quite good. Guilty Gear- METAL!! Also, awesome. VERY awesome. Odin Sphere- Not a very well known game, but a good soundtrack. I'd recommend it, at least. God of War- Ok, so only if you like big, booming, epic tracks. Because that's about half of the soundtrack. But it's still good stuff. Smash Bros.- Got a favorite Nintendo score? Look here and it's probably there! Mario Galaxy- Both are good, but 2 has some really epic stuff. And some happy stuff. And... well ok, it has a lot, and it's good. And last but not least... Halo- Say what you will about the games, but the soundtracks are incredible. Probably my favorite music from a game. |

I'm a sucker for Super Nintendo-era videogame music (Chiptunes? Or is that exclusively 8-bit? I dunno). I'd recommend Kirby Super Star, Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2, and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
For more recent stuff, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia (Or something to that effect, the title's long and I only ever remember the first two words anyway) has some great stuff, as does anything Pokemon related (My roommate has never played a game since Red/Blue, and he's got all the 4th gen stuff on his comp). Unfortunately, most of the anime soundtrack stuff I have because it's sung by the voice actors/actresses, so it wouldn't help you any >.> |

Big and Epic? Excellent. Metal? Even more excellent. I find instrumental metal is very hard to come by, and I put a premium on the stuff.

Also, because this is easily my favorite remix ever, and doesn't require knowing the original tune to listen... Here. |

I'm also a fan of listening to instrumental music while I write, so I might be able to help.
http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/ More specifically, Sunslammer, which is catchy and awesome, and Sunsetter, which is an equally bitchin' chiptune version of the same song. Every Star, Every Planet is fun. Admittedly, most of Murray Gold's work for Doctor Who has been amazing, but I absolutely love this song. From the same series, there's something disturbingly catchy about Donna's theme as well. Of course, as anyone could tell you, the Ace Attorney series has fantastic music, but you knew that, right? |

John Williams's work, too, is good.
Suck it up and go through OC ReMix content. Don't forget to check out Dwelling of Duels, as well. You'll thank yourself down the road when you have tons of fun music.
I myself used to keep up with the site [like five or six years ago...] but now find the date of the most recent submission I have downloaded and kept and peruse/download for hours until I really can't stand it. I do this maybe once a year if I remember. Then I get rid of songs I don't like and keep the rest. It's not a great way to do it, but eh... Effort. Seconding the following games'/game series' original soundtracks: Guilty Gear BlazBlue Mass Effect Halo I would also suggest, if you have access to it, anything by the Black Mages, the various FF soundtracks, orchestral releases, and so forth, as well.
