Movies Robotech Live Action Movie has a director!!

And he is...

Nic Mathieu!!!!

....who the fuck is Nic Mathieu?

...ok, seriously, this guy doesn't even have a IMDB page about him...

Ok Google, do your magic...

...A FUCKING TV CAR COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR!?

Quote:
Nic Mathieu
Director, Anonymous Content
Nic Mathieu’s commercials convey dramatic stories, often driven by fantastical accents. He got started early, taking an original video game project to Virgin Interactive when he was only 16. It blossomed into a 30-day, $1 million shoot and marked Mathieu’s directorial debut. You’ll recognize his handiwork in Cadillac’s iconic Super Bowl spot “Turbulence,” the Orgy promo “Fiction|Dreams in Digital,” and ethereal spots for Banca Generali (“The King of the Sea”) and Cacharel (“Nemo”).

Mathieu was born stateside but moved to Paris when he was 12, where he spent the next 10 years shaping what could aptly be described as a painterly directing aesthetic. (He admires the work of surrealists, the dark canvases of Goya and Géricault, and the sketches of da Vinci.) He learned hand-drawn animation then cell animation, later translating these fundamentals to a fluency in CG. “I love shooting live action,” Mathieu explains. “But I’m drawn to things we haven’t seen before and VFX are often a part of that. I don’t put them in a separate box. They’re part of the continuum of filmmaking.”

Mathieu enjoys the process of commercial making, in particular the problem solving that brings a sophisticated idea to life. He cites his own experience traveling to places like Cairo, Dunedin, NZ and Nairobi vs. the backdrops seen in other films, as inspiration for his own work. In addition to creating short cinematic experiences in commercials, Mathieu is developing feature projects with Warner Bros. and Fox.

...wait, it has the writer from Smallville and Tobey Macguire in it?

Seriously... Macross and Robotech are space Operas about fighter jets that turn into robots and fight in space with copious amount of missiles and that get powered up by the power of SONG.

Shakespeare it ain't. I get it. But they could do at least SOME god damn effort...

...man, i'm just never going to see a modern awesome Real Space Mecha Opera movie am i?

I can even accept Tobby Macguire in the movie... dude has just enough chops to act from a cockpit for about an hour straight... but what annoys me is the untapped potential. Like, it's not even that a TV commercial is a bad thing for a movie like this... it's a LOT about spectacle anyways... That's fine.

But the writer from Smallville? C'mon!...

Sadly it seems now a days, Hollywood just doesn't care enough to really put effort into finding good directors when it comes to live action adaptions of animated shows and movies.

It's why I just stopped watching movies in theaters. Too many bad flicks floating around.

And the leading role goes to Zac Efram of High School Musicrap!

Being sarcastic here but he was being looked to play L and Sousuke Sagara for live action adaptions of those two franchises (Death Note and Full Metal Panic!).

About the only thing that could save this is if we find out the Director is a huge fan of Macross and intends to try and keep to the spirit of this series.

Would be great if he is. Then it'll just all come down to actor and actress performance and how much plot they intended to cram into the movie.

Anybody who wants to adapt a Japanese anime mecha just needs to be shown an episode of Gundam Unicorn and be told "Do THAT but in live action." I mean, the CGI cost would be a decent fortune... but that's just the thing, you can't do a big sci fi full of giant space robots fighting in space without a proper budget... which i don't think this has.

Default Now I wanna draw some Macross Fanart.

Well hopefully the special effects will be decent. Actually you know what, with all the explosions Macross has. Micheal Bay wouldn't be too bad a pick. So long as he's not doing anything beyond effects director.

I'm pretty sure the entirety of the Zac Efron starring in Death Note thing was based around him looking sort of like Light (as represented in the anime, not actually as a Japanese person), especially with whatever hairstyle he had at the time. I don't think anyone was REALLY serious about that...I think that because it helps me sleep at night.
