Default Retconning incoming! Final Fantasy IV: The After Years coming to North America

Guess what the ESRB just rated?

Content descriptors: Alcohol Reference, Mild Fantasy Violence

Rating summary: This is a 2D role-playing game in which players embark on an adventure involving magical crystals and a mysterious kingdom. Players traverse across a field map or through dungeons and can enter into turn-based battles along the way. Players use a menu screen to select attacks or magic spells against tiny enemies (e.g., leopards, birds, knights, fish monsters, etc.) that blink and disappear when defeated. An item called "Bacchus Wine" is occasionally used to defeat enemies in battle.
The game is also coming to XBLA, it seems.

Notice that Microsoft Japan's server appends a "details.page/" to the URL. Now try a different one; replace "finalfantasy4/" with "finalfantasy5/", gibberish, or anything else. No "details" are appended.

What does this mean? A "finalfantasy4" is registered on Microsoft Japan's Xbox 360 web page for some reason -- and we'd be willing to guess it might represent a forthcoming Xbox Live Arcade port of Square Enix's recent cell phone RPG Final Fantasy IV: The After. Just last week, Microsoft stated the following in its press release concerning Square Enix's first two XBLA releases, Yosumin and Crystal Defenders: "Beginning with these two games, Square Enix plans to release a steady stream of its popular titles -- as well as original content -- on Xbox LIVE Arcade". Both Yosumin and Crystal Defenders are ports from mobile platforms, so it's not such a stretch to imagine The After might be next.

Final Fantasy IV: The After is a direct sequel to FFIV, written and directed by original creator Takashi Tokita. A serial RPG in twelve chapters for the Japanese cell phone services (iMode, Yahoo!, and EZWeb), The After stars Cecil and Rosa's son, Ceodore, and takes place a decade after the events of the original game.
I think it's fair to assume PSN is gonna get it too.

Well I like this news. Of course, I'm pretty sure I have FFIV on, like, two of my systems already. PSX, which plays on the PS2, and DS, which plays on the...yeah.

So do I really need another port for the 360? Not particularly.

Read the second quote. This is not a port of the original game.

... well, what IS there to do? FFIV did pretty well in closing all its threads. I never did play the Cell phone sequel, will they be the same?

There's not much information about this project since the discovery is pretty detective-esque work, but it wouldn't be too farfetched to believe this going to be a straight port of the mobile phone game with maybe some extra content.

I'm more worried about whether this is going to be the whole package or if Square will release it per chapters. I have the feeling it will be costlier by using the latter method.

I guess the bottom line is can we expect two companies like Square and Microsoft to consider a more costly method vs. a less costly method............................................ .................................................. ..............................Mmmhmm.

Lookin' forward to this for entirely ridiculous reasons.

Mostly to see if I'm right about whether or not the story is absolute crap. Each new bit of info about the various plot stuffs just makes it out to be even worse than I thought it was, and I'm gettin' sick of that so here's to possibly wasting...

...

Uh... how much can they get away with charging for this, again? I'm hoping it's not more than that FFCC game they've got on Wiiware.
