As of yesterday the crashing is escalating, apparently he can only play Dragon Age: Origins without immediately crashing. TF2, L4D2, MW2, Tropico 3, everything causes a computer-ending crash. The crazy thing is there is absolutely no error message at all at any point ever. Note: Had to delete a bit of the dxdiag to fit the post. |

How old are his components? I was going to ask if his power supply was old, but that would do random reboots, not this.
Is there any cooling on his video card? What about his RAM? People always cool the CPU, but often forget about other components. How well does his PSU move air? The PSU is responsible for like 90% of the airflow in the case. Where is his box stored? Good airflow means nothing if you have it sealed up.

For the right price...

Check the network card.
A friend had identical crashes and we eventually found it to be a problem with the network card. (Only happened with the network cable was plugged in / in use.) (Also, since it seems only networked games cause an immediate crash...) On a high end rig, I would also double/triple check the RAM and hard drives.

All components are brand new (less than 6 months old). Cooling is substantial. I have an identical cooling setup and I am getting on average 20C lower temperatures.
I'll investigate that network card thing. |

I am the Friend.
Tried the network card thing. Removed it, still crashed about a minute and a half into Borderlands. Ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool thing, no problems detected. In short, I have no ideas. Last edited by Aieris; 12-25-2009 at 09:51 PM. |

We have tested each RAM stick to no avail.
Updated the BIOs with no luck. He's gonna try reverting to Windows Vista out of cheer curiousity because all these problems started after Windows 7. That makes NO SENSE however because our hardware is the same and I run Windows 7. |

Couple updates. Azi and I have been tweaking all kinds of BIOs settings, boot settings, and firmware updates. Nothing has really had any effect except we experienced a new type of crash...
I was playing Borderlands and the PC crashed as it normally does. About 5 seconds later, there was a loud click from inside the PC and the game unfroze and played normally again. Azi said he's only ever heard a hard drive and PSU make clicks like that, but my hard drives are solid state so shouldn't....click? Does this seem like a defective PSU? I will be trying to replicate the crash. |

You're right, a solid-state drive has no moving parts and makes no sound whatsoever. If it's a PSU issue, which it might be after all, you have to consider the following:
- is the wattage high enough to meet your needs? - did it suffer a surge, which can partially damage it and lower its stats? - is there a possibility of defects? PSUs aren't the most expensive component, but they're not exactly the cheapest, either, so you should find some way to test it before dropping money on a new one if you can help it.

All-day troubleshooting day 2!

However, we ran a software program that tests the video card extensively for "artefacts" and stresses it out and there was no crash. Power is a possible issue as it always is, though I was looking at the voltages in the BIOs and they were within healthy limits. I guess that's with no load, though. I've had a defective PSU before and it would make clicking noises when it was delivering insufficient power. IN THEORY the PSU should be fine. It's a 1000W supply and on average our PCs should run at about 850W under the heaviest loads, conservative estimate. I'm considering replacing some of the power cords running to the hardware but...I am very quickly running out of ideas. This PC is a Fuck Money Edition so every hardware component is expensive and Aieris would rather not have to drop money on it if we can avoid it. And we definitely don't want to be wrong about which component is messing up. |

That's so PC of you

Have you guys been able to completely rule out the Graphics card as a source for this?
If it only locks on games and it's getting worst, maybe its busted or on it's way to be...? I'm going longshot here and saying that your Graphics card has a cooling fan of it's own. yes? Can you make sure that it's working properly? Maybe that's the click you heard. Also a good Cleaning on the Graphics card just might do the trick. Dust can do nasty things on certain components, even small amounts. |
