Default 'Nuther Hurricane

Evacuations in TX ahead of Hurricane Ike.
Hope all the Texas residents have taken precautions to get out of the way...hope my old hometown (Baytown) makes it through alright

According to the forecast map, Ike's also gonna get Arkansas...I had plenty of fun when Gustav visited, it was rainy and chilly for two-three frakking days while I had to hike across campus to get to my classes, and it really hasn't cleared up since. :gonk:

To get this thread back on a more proper track....

This year, the Gulf doesn't seem to be the prime Hurricane charging zone that it has been in prior years. Hurrican Ike was originally forcast to be very strong, but now appears to be forcast making landfall as a Category 2 hurricane, so damage should be fairly light. It heading for Galveston is pretty bad, though, as Galveston has a bad history with hurricanes.

Sorry for going off track there...

This is from an article on CNN.com:

Quote:
Farther inland, about 100,000 residents in low-lying areas surrounding Houston began evacuating Thursday afternoon as Ike headed for the Texas coast, officials said.

But the remaining 4 million residents were told they could stay home, even as government offices and schools prepared to close Friday in Houston in anticipation of the hurricane.

"We are only evacuating areas subject to a storm surge," said Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, the county's chief executive officer. "Yes, we know you will lose electricity. But you're not in danger of losing your life, so stay put."

Galveston is RIGHT on the coast, Houston 10 miles away from there. It's a great place to visit and beautiful, but seriously flooded right now.

Since I'm further inland (and the fact that Ike is veering NE now...) I don't see the major effects. But I do know of a few people that have gone down to Houston. The police aren't letting people in (danger zone) and the sea wall in Galveston is being hit by 22 ft high waves (the sea wall is 17 ft)

All in all, it's a sucky time to go out.

Plenty of Saturday football games are getting rescheduled because of this... even up here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (where I live). Make no mistake - Ike will be stronger than a Category 2 when it makes landfall. It jumped back up to Category 2 far too fast (watch the solidifying eye after it hops off of Cuba), and the Gulf is primed to fuel it up even more before it reaches the U.S. coast.

I've watched hurricanes like this before, and there's some regular patterns that happen with the big ones. (I lived along the Gulf Coast at one point in time, along with my aunt, who now lives with me because she no longer lives here.)

@ Wigmund - Bryan is the adjacent city to College Station, home to Texas A&M.

@ Tera - You're an Aggie? I was bound to find another one on these forums one day...

Okay, projections now slightly favor a Category 3 at landfall... but only by a matter of a few mph windspeed.

And according to The Weather Channel, Ike covers 40% of the Gulf...and it's kicking up 10+ foot waves.
