Thinking of going to a Convention...
Its been far too long since my last vacation, or any time off in fact, and I was thinking of hitting a convention. I got the idea in my head after seeing G4's E3 coverage.
Thing is, being a complete newbie to this whole convention thing, I was wondering if anybody out there had any advice. The two conventions I'm currently considering are Iacon One, which takes place in Fort Wayne, IN & Comic Con, San Diego, CA. (Comic Con being hyped by G4 at the time of E3, and Iacon One being mentioned by Its Walky/Shortpacked author David Willis). I'm currently leaning a bit more in favor of Iacon, simply because I've got a better chance of booking a hotel room. Plus, there won't be nearly as much jet lag involved. That, and its a bit shorter, which might work better for a con first. But I wouldn't mind hearing what you people think. Maybe you might even give me some advice, or even better suggest some other good cons that are coming up that might be worth planning around. SWB

Speaking from experience, plan it out. Plan how and when you're going to get there, what you're going to do for food, lodging, and transportation. Plan your itinerary from the convention preview guide.
And then plan on throwing all your plans out once you get there, because its going to be utter chaos.

STOP RIGHT THERE!!!
Go to Inconjunction July 4th weekend. If the attendance isn't high, it won't run again...ever. The con has run for at least 16 years, and is THE highlight of my year. Con admission is cheap. You have a good time, and the hotel's not that expensive either. If you were considering Ft. Wayne IN for a con, just go to Incon in Indianapolis instead. BELIEVE ME, there's more people there than the other one and it's FAR more fun. And as a side note, I'm not saying people get so drunk that they have naked parties or anything, but people get so drunk that they have naked parties. :P www.inconjunction.org |

Water. Water, water, and more water. You don't want to be getting dehydrated out there. And it is a serious possibility.

Be prepared for nerd stink no matter what show you end up going to. No matter how many times how many cons put oh hay guys basic hygiene is like totally fun-damental in their programs, the place is going to smell like the backseat of a used Crown Victoria where a naked fat man sits eating Funyuns. In July. This goes triple for the dealers' room.

Yeah, I've also noticed that some people are fearful of spray deoderant. It's like pepper Spray to them.
And yes, I would reccomend bringing you own water. From what I'm told, drinks can be quite expansive.
