Default Let's Watch: Futurama/Futurama discussion

Thread title stolen from SS.

So more recently I nabbed DVDs of Seasons 1 and 2 of Futurama, and began to watch them during Warhammer painting and whatever other task lay before me. I always knew I liked Futurama but I hadn't had a chance to sit down and watch it before (No TV, among other things).

This show is completely awesome. Favorite episodes so far are Raging Bender, when Bender becomes a robot fighter, and How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back, when Planet Express gets taken over by Morgan the bureaucrat. Worthy mention is Why Must I Be a Crustacean in Love.

Just nabbed Season 3, haven't opened it yet. Thoroughly enjoying it so far otherwise.

My favorite episode is the one with Seymour. Closest thing ever in the history of television to bring a tear to my eye.

Anyone know if the movies were any good?

I only saw Bender's Big Score, and although it's not always incredibly funny, it's still a rather good movie.

What Snake said is the reason this is my favorite animated comedy, it achieved such a perfect balance of great comedy, and having me actually care about the characters.

Haven't gotten there yet, but I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be. It's just Matt Groening and the Futurama world with the leash taken off.

Ah yes, Futurama. My favorite animated tv series of all time. It is the only cartoon show I like more than the Boondocks, Death Note, and Eureka Seven. True true.

My favorite episodes are A Fishful of Dollars, When Aliens Attack, Why Must I be a Crustacean in Love, Put Your Head on my Shoulders, Mother's Day, Anthology of Interest I, Insane in the Mainframe, Roswell that Ends Well, A Taste of Freedom, and Where no Fan Has Gone Before. Dang, that's a lot of favorite episodes, but then again, I wasn't kidding when I said this is my favorite cartoon series ever.

As for the movies? The first two are alright, but not fantastic. Don't know about the other two (probably because they're not out yet.) They're certainly worthwhile if you're a Futurama fanatic.

One last thing; I'm a fan of Lrrr of the planet Omicron Persei 8, "THIS CONCEPT OF 'WUV' CONFUSES AND INFURIATES US!"

If the episode with seymour makes you sad, then you need to watch Bender's Big Score. It makes me feel a lot better about that dog.

Bender's Big Score was practically its own art if you've watched the rest of Futurama. The way they brought together so much of the series at once while vaguely teasing at other parts of the show while rolling around in one helluva storyline is absolutely... astonishing. My testicles grew two sizes that day.

Beast with a Billion Backs was not nearly as impressive. Maybe I was jaded after Big Score, but it could hardly keep my interest, and I was left a little disappointed when the movie was actually over. I dunno, it didn't feel like it really accomplished anything or had a point. ...Aside from proving that Bender's a big ol' dick.

Disagree. That aspect of the movie doesn't flow well with what we got in the Seymour episode, and it takes away the emotional ending. After watching the movie, that episode will never be as good.

As a guy who can't watch Where the Red Fern Grows without crying, Seymour's fate always leaves me with, at the very least, moist eyes. The bee one kind of makes me choke up sometimes too.

Then there's the basketball/time warping episode, which is just comedy gold.

Bender's Big Score was amazingly funny and epic.

The Beast With a Billion Backs was just so odd. I mean, the writers are good about having some sort of subtle message in certain episodes, or at least making you care about the characters in a way you don't expect (The last episode in the show has been known to bring a tear to some people's eyes). So when the message seems to be 'hey, pologamy is pretty ok' and it isn't even subtle, it leaves you with a weird feeling. Maybe they were just having a laugh, or maybe it was over-produced, but it didn't end up being that funny.
