After The Hype
So quick question, (and I was thinking about this afore the "There Will Be Brawl" thread) but what do you guys think of the over-hyped games?
You know, those games that usually mark the coming of a new system, or a landmark in the history of a company, or a new Final Fantasy game - things that get promoted from your iPhone to your browser to your movie previews to your billboards. There was Assassin's Creed and Heavenly Sword for the PS3, and everyone remembers the Gears of War and Halo 3 crowds gearing up. But I think the biggest hype of all goes to the Wii for Super Smash Brothers Brawl. There was the fanbase supporting Kojima for Metal Gear Solid 4, but that still fell behind SSBB. So here's the question I have - was all the hype worth it? Does the product stand up to the hype? I guess this would go for consoles, too - the console wars can now be (I hope) looked back on objectively. Do the three consoles stand up to their previous claims? What do you think of what you were so excited for then, now? |

Brawl's hype would have been worthier if Sakurai hadn't spoiled almost the entire game before release. Sure, following the Dojo! updates was fun, but it took away a lot of the surprise.
MGS4's hype was definitely not worth it. |

In recent memory, Scribblenauts, easy. What's funny is the hype was based off of people playing the game, then when it came out the people playing it started to hate it. Scribblenauts was an odd game.
I think my favorite is when they announced Sonic was in and quietly changed the release date to "TBD" while people were fangasming, and I was one of the few who noticed.

Tails used to be cool, yo.
I enjoyed playing Sonic in Brawl+, but I think Sonic would've been cooler if it had been Sonic and Tails a la Ice Climbers.

Hype killed the radio star... Or something.
Scribblenauts got overhyped on being super special and original and unique and different and awesome and it gives free blow jobs and no it did not live up to this hype.
Afro Samurai got a fair amount of hype, but the gameplay was very disappointing. Resident Evil 5 got a lot of hype and I guess it maybe probably deserved it but I didn't really get into it. Of course, my first two examples didn't get near the amount of hype as the games Seil started with, but whatevs. EDIT: Oh yeah the new Prince of Persia game from last year holy shit that game sucked.

This isn't even an argument.
As far as games that exist, Daikatana, as far as games that don't, DukeNukemForever, as far as games that will, Starcraft II (until they patch it over the course of three years).

Jurassic Park: Trespasser was a similar flop that promised lots.
I don't think this one works. Didn't most people know he talks out of his ass and is pretty out there?
I didn't read any reviews or ads for it, though, so he may have marketed it a lot. It's difficult for me to say, as to the topic. I mean, it's one thing for me to be excited about a particular game or to know people who are, but it's another to call it "hype". It's not easy to gauge the latter when you don't care for the noise surrounding the industry and pay it no mind. I'm not oblivious to the fact that it happens [see: many of the games already mentioned], but I'm also inclined to believe that nearly every game is over hyped. Some end up deserving it, though.

Assassins Creed was WAY overhyped and almost killed my love of gaming when I got it. Can't really think of any others that got me really hyped up that I don't think deserved it.
Well, except for GTA4. Searched everywhere for this on release day and then got bored within 2 weeks and didn't even finish it. As for everything else, I duno, I don't think I really get into this whole "hype" thing. If there is a game that I get excited for, it usually turns out good, but isn't always a well known massive blockbuster hit that everyone else knows about and gets really overhyped (like Borderlands; I was waiting for this game for years and am seriously impressed by it, but it seems to have gone unnoticed by most gamers). I think maybe Shadow of the Colossus is the only game that lived up to the hype, but even then I can't remember how well known it was before release.

Yeah that's pretty much true. Back in the day Ocarina of Time too. Can't think of many others that reached and in the case of OoT surpassed the kinda hype they got.
Oh yes. Fuck did that game annoy me, I was looking forward to it so much after San Andreas then they took out almost everything I liked in GTA, fucked up the physics and made the combat shitty. Playing that game for the first time was like getting a quick kick in the balls. Just glad I bought it second hand so Rockstar didn't get any of my money.
