The Broken: Sign-up
Anyone can obtain great and terrible power, but only those few with the misfortune to obtain it know how. To gain this power, one must violate the morality that is core to their being. Something so horrible they can never fully recover. Those that do this have their minds wrecked with guilt and regret also break down the barriers keeping them from dormant power.
So damaged are the minds of those that gain this power, they are collectively refered to as The Broken. In this modern world they are mere myth. Those few that obtain the power often isolating themselves to drown their despair or taking their own lives. Others refusing to ever use their power, for it is also a sign of the great evil they committed to obtain it. Setting:Modern day. Existance of The Broken is at various levels of knowledge. Thanks to a mix of cover-ups, sketicism, and the internet most view them as myths. They have heard of them, but few believe they exist. Most also know only that you must do something horrible to gain this power. Leading to the steriotype that if they do exist, they must all be inherently evil, which is far from the truth Decending to Power: There is a reason there aren't armies of superpowered sociopaths running around. Because they have few qualms about committing their horrors they can never gain this power. What it is depends on the person but they must break their highest held value. Some examples, a religious zealot destroying a sacred relic, a member of PETA skinning an animal alive, a pacifist nuking a small nation. The reasons why they'd do these things often fall into one of the following. Greater good: maybe a mother killed her child, but only because the alternative was they both died. Accidental: You killed your best friend but only because you thought he plotted to kill you. Influenced: Something outside your control made you do it. Drugs, torture, psychic control of a Broken, ect, that altered your perceptions or will to make you do these things. Not that it lessens the pain Instinct: Few would like to admit the horrible things they'd do out of fear and desperation. Important thing is whatever the reason, deep down the Broken finds it no excuse for what they did. To forgive oneself is to repair ones psyche and seal away the power once more. This does however mean that although they did something horrible they are otherwise moral individuals. This also means they suffered a horrible trauma and not a single one can be called psychologically stable. Powers: They vary wildly but normally are singular abilities that the Broken learn to manipulate in various ways. Starting characters will be recently broken and have very basic low level powers. That will evolve over time. But as for the nature of those powers, have fun with it. Profile: Name: Age: Gender: Appearance: Bio: (should include how you Broke) Power: Main: (general power they have, ex fire, strength, information) Sub: (start with three, ex from fire, ignite hand, shoot small fire ball, snuff small flames from a distance) All characters have done horrible things that they themselves view as unforgivable. Thus should have varying degrees of psychological problems like PTSD, depression, ect.
