Lawrence Hill, author of The Book Of Negroes (which won the Commonwealth Writers Prize for best book) wrote Some Great Thing, which I'm now reading. And it's pretty good.

It tells of an un-ambitious, directionless twenty-something who falls into journalism as a profession in the eighties and goes from there. It's worth a look.
