Advice: Netbook powers off without warning
Quick Summary: I currently own a Gateway LT3201h. It's a Netbook. The video card runs so hot on this machine that it's capable of inflicting burns (And the Windows 7 sticker on the bottom of the machine is actually singed black).
Normally I'd just point and say "Heating issue, lol" but that... doesn't seem accurate here. The machine will power off while running cold. Full power cut. Usually just as I hit CTRL or Fn. I'm about 90% certain that I'm just going to cash in on that 3 year warranty I bought on this thing from Futureshop (it covers random "This is happening, I don't like it, give me a new one."), but it's always tedious to have to back up all my stuff and set up a new machine. I'm posting to see if there's advice or any known defects that I should know about here, and whether or not to get the same machine and hope for the best, or to grab a similar product off the shelf. Edit: For added reference, I've had the netbook now for 5 months; The issue has been occuring since early november, so roughly 1 month ago. Issue occured 7 times. |

can you give us screen shots of your Heat management and Power management in properties?? That would help. also Do you know where the outtake vent is on your lap top and if air is flowing out?

@Doc:
The vent is on the left side of my netbook; it's flowing fine. The heating issue appears when I use the HDMI output the most. And no, I can't provide those screenshots as I've never used any utilities for such things. |

I mean at this point I'd be willing to call it latent heat damage from the case getting hot enough to singe paper. My netbook runs hot (max 70C at the cpu), sure, but the case never gets past pleasantly warm. Ditch the fucking thing for being a fire hazard. Seriously.

Do you even keep that much on a netbook?
hahaha holy shit
Your machine has actually gotten hot enough to burn stickers. Do you have a record of what you were doing each time it's turned off? I mean, "heat lol" for sure, but I'm curious as to what is pushing it if it's not only when you are doin' video.

Twice it shut down while I was updating Java. Once it shut down while watching a .wmv on media player. Once it shut down while my significant Other was playing Minecraft. I'm well aware this thing is a bloody fire hazard. :P I don't have any other even 'marginally' performing PC, and I have school work that needs submitting, so I've been toughing it out before calling in the warranty repair (Which I'm doing Sunday). I'm not finding any complaints about this model running so hot, and I'm wondering if anybody knows of a consumerist-like site that might have some feedback, re: "It set my fucking cat on fire" or something, so I can know which model to swap this out for, or if it's a unique condition to just my own machine. |
