So there's this lady, Nina Davuluri:

She's a pretty lady, right? She's also an Indian-American representing New York in the Miss America Pageant. And that's bad, apparently.

Can't have any brown people in 'Murica! This is worse than Miss Kansas, who, despite having fought for America in the military, sparked a little controversy by walking the catwalk sporting tattoos. My word!

Nina Davuluri apparently performed an Indian dance as part of the talent portion, 'cause, you know, that's new and interesting in the competition:

But she wasn't aware she was labeling herself as a terrorist by being brown skinned and in public.

At least she's not letting it bother her.

Wow, people are so hilariously misinformed about the different countries in the world and the racists don't seem to care. I'm starting to wonder where they got 'Arab' and 'Al-Qaeda' out of 'Indian-American'. The UAE and India are a pretty decent landmass apart and these people would see it if they opened a damn atlas or even a map of the eastern hemisphere. I guess they can't tell the difference in the 'brown-skinned' races. I could name quite a few others, but it's pretty damn clear she wasn't Arabic in the first place. I was inclined to actually use my Twitter to educate people, but I suppose trying to convince people who have already convinced themselves otherwise is a moot point.

tl;dr Some people need to educate themselves before making a comment and looking like asses.

I don't think that the twits tweeting thought about land masses or anything really but the knee jerk reaction that "non white = terrorist."

You know, when I opened this, I really didn't know what to expect. But this? this is insane. I'm genuinely shocked by the level of racism displayed. I mean, I shouldn't be, but... ugh.

My favorite part is how these people are perfectly comfortable putting their names to the racist comments their making for all the world to see.

As grand as the right to free speech is, I think people are taking advantage of the fact they can say what they want, even with their names in full view and know nothing will be done about it. You have to allow hate speech as well and I suppose using the Neo-Nazi rallies as an example is too extreme? Look at Stormfront and Chimpout instead, both anti-'everything that isn't white', the latter which claims to be 'less extreme' than the former. (With the former having been around since the dawn of the Internet.)

I think there might be subtle irony to the fact they didn't even get the ethnicity right. So, for the moment, I think all I can do is shake my head and laugh. Because while it's racism, yes, it's so horribly misdirected that it's more funny than shameful. I also agree and even with my above statement, I still find it odd that they decided to put their names out there. What with Internet Anonymity still a big topic these days.

It's pretty telling that many of these accounts are (or were, as several I looked into -- as best as I can without an actual Twitter account -- appear to have been deleted or shut down [or named changed, at the least]) owned by students, high school and young college. These are people who have likely grown up, at least partially (arguably in the most active social years of childhood), always connected and online. Being an asshole amongst friends and being an asshole out in public aren't different any more.

Unfortunately, that means several of them can and likely have voted in our elections.

Worse, I doubt any of them are even apologetic or aware of both how wrong they are or how awful they are. I, of course, am assuming they weren't raised to not be racists.

Edit: And it seems folks are also passing around photos of Miss Kansas, I think, as the "true" Miss America. Which furthers the "if it's not white, it's not American" shit.


Side note: Nina is gorgeous. Kudos to her win!

I mean, yeah... you can say what you want. Even hate speech is free speech. But you are not invulnerable to consequences for it. You just have the right to say it to any one who chooses to listen. That's about it really... nobody can tell you not to say something.... you can say it. Even if it's dumb and stupid or racist... But the consequences are still there to be had.

The First Amendment only states that the state/federal government cannot prosecute you for your opinions. Private employers and other citizens are free to react according to their feelings, whether it's firing your racist ass or pointing and laughing at your racist ass on the internet.
