I got MMOs in different area codes
I've been playing a lot of MMOs lately so I guess I'm gonna ramble about them all here.
FFXIV: Definitely the best MMO I've played of late. Apart from me just plain being a Final Fantasy fan, I like how the game handles combat in terms of avoiding AoEs and stuff. I play a Bard and it's been a real blast for me. I also like the crafting system, my main complaint against it being that it's so reliant on materials from other classes that it can be either expensive or tedious to get all the materials together. I also love the writing. It's genuinely charming and the overall plot is pretty decent and hasn't really crawled up its own ass yet. PSO2: My second favorite MMO. It's super grindy and they do that gacha machine stuff basically for a lot of costume stuff, which I find gross, but the fact that it's pretty much just Japanese players right now means I don't have to put up with the community, and the ally system lets me play by myself! I play as a Ranger and the third person shooter style really works. Vindictus: I started playing this fairly recently on Krylo's recommendation. It's got some laughable grossness with some of the stuff made for women characters, but it's got a pretty solid action game feel and has more mission variety and more quests than PSO2. Writing I don't really care either way on but I'm still reading the quest descriptions so I guess that says something. Main problem right now is just that it's getting hard to solo some stuff, which either means I've been investing in skill growth poorly or I'm just bad at the game. Either way. TERA: I started playing this last night. I'm playing an Elin cuz it suits my own littleness, tho I'm aware that most of the folks who play them are creeps. This game is really pretty and the combat's pretty fun too. I also like that I can just run around and gather stuff without needing to start mining as a profession or whatever. My main criticism thus far is the community. I think I'm gonna have to turn off general chat because so far this game's community seems the worst I've actually had to deal with in any MMO ever. Lots of really gross dudes and it makes me feel really unsafe and really uncomfortable. The Secret World: I haven't played this in a while, but it's a pretty fun game. The skill/leveling system is cool. Main criticism is it feels SUPER gear dependent, and if you fall behind on gear you'll get fuckin wrecked really fast. Then again, I could just be bad or have bad skill choice. I dunno about the community cuz I never interact with anyone in it.

People keep bugging me to try this, and I actually liked the ORIGINAL beta (I think I was like the only person who did, in spite of the massive UI issues and UI lag problem) and was on the verge of subbing if not for the whole '$5 a month per extra character' thing. . . so, yeah, I tossed it on my Wishlist so Steam would let me know when it goes on sale.
Utilities have gone down, too though, and I just recently got a raise (still not making much) so I might nab it near the latter half of this month and try it for the free 30 days. I doubt I'll stick around paying a sub fee, though, but you know, I don't play MOST games for 30 days (I usually marathon them for a week or two), so whatever. Probably make a Miqote, like I did back in the original beta. Quote:
Sinasis is the character name, on Ship 2. I'm planning on doing a write up of it over in the other thread once I hit level 30. I'd have done it already, but I missed out on a few things I should have mentioned in Neverwinter by making that one too early (and I've been meaning to get onto updating that as well), and didn't want to make the same mistake. As that 30 is when you get your class upgrade thing, though, I figured that'd be a good time. Quote:

Actually I think the first really good story scene happens in your twenties, in Ainle. Quote:
If you've hit fifty and are doing hero difficulty, some of that stuff is just impossible to solo, depending on your class, until you get upwards of 30aspd (40 if you're doing scythe). On the bright side, the community isn't too bad usually, and you can tell Manofspaz I sent you, if you see him on. He's a friend of mine and a really nice guy. And also really really really good at the game. Like, solos some of the biggest pain in the ass raid bosses with no real issues despite being too lazy and poor to really have end tier gear. You can also bug me on whatever messaging programs or Steam if you need help with something. I'll PROBABLY be willing to hop on and play for a bit. Though, at the end of the day, Vindictus is a game I suggest just practicing with until you can solo stuff, because it's possible and why wouldn't you try to be the best you can be? Quote:
And they're all hyper-competitive in PvP things and. . . yeah okay no, the community was always awful. I was playing mostly with Steel and PF tho so I got to ignore it for the most part. Though that one time I ended up raid leader in a castle siege was pretty great. Totally crushed the other team like bugs. Also made a friend or two just chilling. So, you know, good with the bad. Anyway, my favorite class to play was slayer, specifically castanic female. The animations just feel. . . right, for some reason. I had a high elf one too but everything seemed weird and awkward, 'cause high elves always gotta look like they're at a fashion show and it just flowed really oddly with the greatsword stuff. Cast female, though, everything's just perfect. Plus the high risk, high reward play style of the slayer just speaks to me on a spiritual level. Weirdly, despite being the least survivable class, they still do better solo than in parties (unless the party has a healer and a tank), because they don't really have many 'oh shit' buttons to press and aggro switching on enemies just wrecks 'em. Or at least me when I'm playing. Quote:

A friend of mine mentioned she gave up on the game after twenty minutes cuz of the community. I turned off all the chat stuff tho so I'll just solo and if I need to party up I'll just harass Mick. I'm having a lot of fun now that I don't have to listen to people tho.

Yeah, it's why I really stopped playing TERA here. Plus it got rather boring playing on my own.

EVERYONE PLAY THE SECRET WORLD WITH ME.
By which I mean yeah I'm into it to, it may be my only MMO at the time. It is incredibly gear dependent I will not lie, because leveling up only allows you to get more skill diversity, your stats only increase via your talismans so when you are considering your gear you really need to figure it in advance. On the plus side though getting gear isn't really hard unless you happen to be at the ass end of the game, so if you haven't fucked up before like quality level 7 you have plenty of time to unfuck yourself before you get to 10+ purples. I also don't do a lot of interaction on the game though, haven't had the time or found the right people on my server. I really just want to get together a bunch of people to roleplay with me. I'm also interested in just adventuring and even helping people level up since I'm finally unfucking my own major screw ups in the end game equipment. And the more I adventure with people the more chance I have to fix it. I love it though. Modern fantasy is my jam. Oh yeah and Lilith is part of the lore.

I've been looking into Wildstar for a bit and think it might be something I'd like to play. Reminds me of old school wow with animal crossing and more twitchy combat. If I could get ahold of a guest pass that'd be sweet, but otherwise I'm going to have to wait till I get back from vacation next month to rationalize buying it.
