Default Neo Geo

Who else but me remembers the Neo Geo? Sure it didn't fare as well as Game Boy did and the company won't make another but there were some good games...

I never knew there was a system.

There was this great fighting game that I played when I was young. It was on a Neo Geo arcade machine.
Unfortunately, it was in a bar, and I couldn't get in for very long without people asking me about my parents.

But the game, who knows what it's called, had an intro of some red haired guy and his family in a picture. Then the picture broke. Very dramatic. It's a fighting game and you're searching for the killer or something.
In 2 player, there's also some dude with a black ponytail, a white shirt and white jeans.

I remember that the first fight was with some dude on his porch, the second was with the generic fat man with a lot of HPs in a bar. He kept throwing himself at me and was hard to beat...

Anyway, it was a really fun game, but I never played it enough to gain proficiency. I'd love to get it's name, buy the freking machine, and play it until I beat it. Or something... Anybody have any clues?

I've been passively trying to get ahold of a Neo AES system, but they're just too damned expensive. Last guy I talked to actually wanted $200 for the system with one controller, I just kinda laughed.

As far as I know, the NG achieved the longest lifespan for any gaming console. They just released the last title for it this year, Samurai Spirits V Special.

Yes, the Neo Geo was one of THE most expensive handhelds. Probably one of the reasons it didnt succeed. Yes, I would have gladly bought it and Metal Slug 3 - if the cartridges werent just as expensive.

I dont know though, I was very fond of Neo Geo games (my friend owned one so I whored him ) and the arcade systems, thats where I was first able to play Samurai Showdown. <3333 Hanso.

I think we need to say which Neo Geo we are talking about. There is the Neo Geo console system and there is the Neo Geo Pocket. With the original Neo Geo system that retailed for somewhere around $400 or so and all the game cartridges were like $200 a piece, but the same cartidges would work in the arcade cabinets. While the NG Pocket only lasted about what 10 months? It had potental but no backing from other publishers.

Well, concerning home/arcade compatibility, you're sorta correct. While the ROM boards were cross-compatible (100% identical software-wise... AES carts weren't just arcade perfect, they *were* the arcade games), they used a different interface to connect to the cartridge slot. It is possible to convert an MVS cart to be used on an AES system, though I sense there's some measure of controversy in the NG community concerning this process.

Also, I believe the Neo was about $600 when it released, though $200/cart seems about right. New releases usually retail for $300+ even still. It's by far the most expensive system to collect for, with some of the gems like Metal Slug regularly fetching $2-3000+. Most old systems, you can purchase the more common titles for a mere dollar or two, sometimes even less. Lowball prices on Neo games usually tail off around $40-50, to give you an idea.
