I mean retconning between the two animes, not between the animes and the manga. I could have swore they were present at the birth of Hughes' kid in one of the first ten or so episodes of the first anime. The first episode of FMA: BH, however, shows that it is the first time they meet Hughes, and his daughter is already 2-3 years old. And I know for sure that they met Armstrong at least a whole season after Hughes, but apparently in FMA: BH they have known Armstrong for a decent amount of time.

Pretty much everything you said is true concerning the changes (I don't recall when they met Armstrong in the first anime, but otherwise yeah). Some things were changed around as far as who knew what people and when, including that Ed and Al don't meet Hughes till much later time-wise.

A few other events are different as well, so just sit back, relax, and forget everything you already knew about FMA. That's the easiest way to watch this, I think.

PS The episode that aired last Saturday, the one with Nina? Yeah, that episode was terrible. Like, it's still the Nina episode, but it completely lacked the impact of the first anime's. Especially the ending.

from what I can tell is they are condencing the episodes already done in the previous series. So kinda screws with pacing.

Though its not really retconning. Since the first series and this one are not the same continuity

FMA:B is supposed to be closer to the original manga(supposed to be)
so, consider FMA:B as taking plac after the brothers have gotten started, wheras the first anime spent almost half a season telling their origin story, and thus slipped Hughes in that way.

I meant the massive changes to the plot and characters and universe came from the fact that the manga was incomplete. They should've waited until the manga was complete or to the point it's at now before starting the new anime, is what I meant.

As for the meeting Hughes in the new one, they weren't present at Hughes' child's birth, that's being confused with the Rush Valley birth which is in the new anime as well. The first time we see Hughes in the first anime is on the battle on the train, pretty sure, and there isn't any sort of flashback with Hughes or anything implying they were there when Elicia was born.

And the new anime didn't have the battle on the train episode at all, unfortunately, even though it's in the manga. They also skip the Youswell episode which is just rendered as a flashback like twenty episodes later...it's definitely condensed at the beginning, but then they started taking more time with each event in the episodes.

At least with FMA we know they will finish it one way or the other if they don't add more episodes. I remember watching Trinity Blood and it just basically ended on a "cliffhanger" to an extent with no movie ever materializing that I'm aware of.

I was glad I never bothered to finish Trinity Blood after learning that. I'm mostly alright with brotherhood's pacing.

They were there for Elicia's birth. Half of the first season was a flashback. He met Hughes on the train, on their way to take the State Alchemist's test, they went to Central, And were allowed to apprentice under Shou Tucker for a bit, then, on Ed's birthday, Elicia was born. The Rush Valley episode had no baby, it was all about Paninya

On a related note, I think the manga is about to end (next month, maybe, if Arakawa doesn't milk it any further, but I forgive her since it has been an awesome milking) so at least they won't have to make up their own ending (thank goodness).
