New Webcomics Thread is Tremendously Magnificent

Anyone here read Misfile? I ended up finding out about it a few days ago when I got lost for hours on TV Tropes.

Over all I'm really liking it. It combines an interesting take on heaven with a decent "coming of age" story with a splash of Fast and the Furious all while being a rather creative allegory for self identity, gender confusion, and acceptance.

Really, do you have anything to back that up? The art style is at least B-grade, the characters are pretty enjoyable, and the story thus far has been better than my first impression led me to believe.

I am actually really interested in finding out how this whole things ends. At this point everything is still pretty much up in the air.

I like Misfile. If nothing else, they put out one page every weekday at 9 AM almost without exception. I wish I had that kind of discipline. Heck, that and QC are mostly the reasons I turn my computer on in the mornings. Mostly.

And it's big with the transgendered crowd, judging by the forums, so I'm guessing they've done the research. There's a lot of the plot that rings true to me, although Ash is a silly wain who thinks his identity is dependent on his sex and that gets annoying. And it's weird he has no muscle memory or sense memory from being a girl all his life, like the physical world has had no impact on him.

On reflection, all the hundreds of things that keep the story and the conflicts from ending are pretty annoying. Obviously the misfile is never going to get undone cause that would make the whole story have never happened and that wouldn't be fun for anyone. The only thing that can happen is the protagonists making their peace with God and live happily ever after. And Emily is at least halfway there. So all that's left is Ash being stupid and refusing to accept reality forever, unless the comic ends.

So okay, it's not that excellent. But I guess it draws you in like any soap opera, you get to know the characters and get invested in them and that keeps you interested no matter what useless crap they actually do. Although there have been some high points of both humor and drama.

If that is what you consider B-grade art, then you must curve generously.

It's fairly bland copy-the-anime art. Plus, on top of it, it's fairly inconsistant and it seems that anything that isn't the two main characters bodies gets a much poorer rendering job. There is a ludicrous amount of Male Gaze packed in there as well.

as for the writing, there's a lot going on in the story because the author can't commit to one thing. He can't decide what he wants hiscomic to be, so he just throws everything in there. And it gives it a confused jumbled feel. It's not good writing.

The whole thing is like a tic or two above what I would likely find on average in the Gaia Comic Creator's forum. It is not a good comic.

It's not C-grade art like Keychain of Creation or early Questionable Content was. It's not stick figures like XKCD (impressive though those stick figures are). On the high end it's not A-grade like our very own HIKYM here at NPF. So yeah, B-grade is fair. I've seen similar work being sold in various anime convnetions' Artist's Allys.

I really feel that there's a lot that needs to be going on as far as the story is concerned. Granted there are a few story threads that I'd rather see axed or at least brought to a swifter conclusion I'm still somewhat happy with how things are being paced.

As much as it pains me to admit this, back when I was a Gaian regular I routinely found a few jems in the rough while browsing the forums. If this was there, it'd have been one of them.

EDIT: But who knows, maybe I'm just attracted to a PG-13ish comic about fake lesbians.

Hell, "I saw it in artist's alley" should NOT be a gauge of good or even acceptable art. You know what it takes to get a table in artists alleys? The registration fee.

I'm just going to toss out there that there is a difference between "I saw it for sale" and "I saw it sold." And I really feel that you are not giving enough credit to people who do try to sell art in those places. Your work has to not only be passable but also better than the fifty other people drawing the same anime-esque crap you are.

No, you just need to pander to the audience. And a lot of the audience at anime cons? Very low expectations, very exploitable.
