Yeah but I mean there's a fundamental difference between insulting a character and insulting a person.

Like to be frank you can insult Kanaya, Solid Snake (the character, not me), Pinkie Pie, or whatever and that's like fine with me, you'd never see me do one of my classic overreactions to someone saying "Pinkie Pie is my least favorite pony and she is totally a jerk." I'd probably respond in a defense of Pinkie Pie and I might act offended but at no point would I actually interpret it as a personal slight: saying "Pinkie Pie is awful" is something I'd disagree with, and something I'd take poorly, but instead I'd just make some "Nah dude you's gots poor taste, Pinkie Pie is rad" response and we'd move on.

And I have no problem with someone disagreeing with me on Rarity or defending her, in fact my comments about Rarity are often geared towards playfully tickling the sensibilities of those who like Rarity lots, that's not what this is about.

There's just a fundamental difference between all that criticism levied at characters, or even levied at peoples' opinions of characters, and saying "You need help" -- that's a serious statement questioning the psychological health of a person.

And even then I kind of laughed it off and assumed it was a joke the first time or two that someone threw out the "You need help" spiel, but then several others kind of jumped on that bandwagon and it started to feel less like a good-natured ribbing and more like a mean-spirited beatdown.

EDIT: Nah PCD like that's actually a perfect example of the kind of ribbing I actually find completely legitimate. I have no problem exchanging barbs with someone who dislikes Pinkie, or exchanging barbs with someone who loves Rarity, because the ribbing centers on insults directed towards fictional characters, and we just assign different weight and value to the characters and enjoy getting each other riled up over whether we like or dislike them.

Twilight's the only pony I really like, and only because she reacts to everyone else's ridiculous bullshit in exactly the same way any sane person would. Which is to say with a face palm.

But then, I don't even really like the show that much, so what do I know?

... It's pretty good for a cartoon series developed entirely for preadolescent girls, I guess.
