See now I'm confused. The first bits were like in futureland where everyone had energy weapons, Johnny Cage was in a modern setting, and Raiden landed in a mental institution from like the 50s.
Also what was the point of that episode? We learn nothing about Raiden. It seems unlikely that it'll affect the plot later. It was just like a family guy joke " Remember the time that raiden got stuck in a mental institution?" |

Seil your link to episode 6 is a link to episode 5.
EDIT; Ok, finally got around to seeing 5 and 6. 5... meh, Kitanna and Mileena Outworldy stuff is pretty boring any day of the week. 6 I quite liked though. Raiden is pretty awesome, and he's played by Henry from Sanctuary which is... an odd choice, but I think it strangely works. I don't think the lack of characterisation is neccesarily a bad thing for him either; he's a thunder god, he exists to kick arses and electrocute the fuck out of shit, what more do you need to know? At least now we seem to be forming a coherent timeline of events, presumable Raiden got himself killed at the start of that episode trying to stop Shao Kahn from busting through into Earth, so now they need to get the tournament on the go in order to prevent an all out invasion, which I guess means the whole "win 10 straight tournaments to invade" policy is being left out for this series. Still waiting on Sub Zero and Scorpion though, I'm guessing they're being brought in last.

Remember SMB futurland was taking advantage of the scifi power of the Military having technology so advanced we can't tell people about it. The cops themselves seemed to have a close connection to the same DOD works in order to put them on equal level on a black market that stole them. So they have the advantage of being secret.
Johnny is more suitably modern, but it can be expected as he is a no name actor he shouldn't have such access. As far as Raiden goes, while the US has done quite a bit of deinstitutionalization we haven't fully torn down all psychiatric hospitals and as such Raiden ending up in such a place isn't unusual, nor is keeping him there since he did seem the kind who may be a danger to himself and others if his beliefs were so delusional. The means by which they attempted to cure him did seem a bit much, but considering the series I am not surprised. I mean fucking ketamine as his general anesthetic? What is this a vet's office? And I think around they end they were delivering a very crude frontal lobotomy. At any rate I'm sure they'll give us the reason behind him being sent down. Probably because you have to give up your godliness to be in the Mortal Kombat tournament and he is the protector of Earthrealm. And I figure the psyche ward gave him a better idea of how most of humanity is going to see his claim, and also that there are still people worth saving on this realm.

Hasn't Raiden's story always been that he incarnated himself as a mortal so that he could participate in Mortal Kombat? Maybe the descent from heaven is just a bit turbulent.
How the hell did that mental institution get the right to hold him? Like, do asylums just practice "finders keepers" or what? If so, they already broke that rule, 'cause the girl totally found him first. Quote:

I imagine the place was fundamentally fucked and had a terrible filing system and so they just said, "Hey, fucker is in white. Obviously one of ours." After that it was probably easy for them to legitimize it by him screaming, "I am Lord Raiden! Protector of the Earth!"
Also that wasn't trepanation, that was a frontal lobotomy. The difference being in trepanation it doesn't matter where you put the hole as long as there is a hole in the head, the lobotomy was meant to create purposeful dementia in the frontal lobe in the hopes of radical personality changes. Though that bit isn't worth arguing about, that whole hospital was obviously fucked up.

Nobody lobotomies since the 1960s. NObody holds a patient for 3 months who appeared out of nowhere. These places get inspected. And are not run by psycopaths.
ANd why would you bother? Your funding is based on patient numbers- you not going to get paid for a patietn you have no paperwork for and if you do declare him he going to be removed fromo your care. Also him saying "I'm Lord Raiden" isn't enough to keep him. He would eed a full psychiatric assessment which would be done by an outside professional who going to rat you out. And fucken lobotomies. Holy shit. This isn't a mental institution. This is a deranged fiefdom run by a criminal mastermind, trying to commit as many outrageous crimes as he can get away with for the shits and giggles of it. |

Like my biggest problem is the motivation of the director of the hospital. Does he just like toturing people? Casue if he wanted to help Raiden just call in some outside help. Patients in mental institute need regular contact with a psychiatrist- is there one on staff that the director is keeping quiet somehow? He would surely recommend bringing some specialists in. The only motivation for the director seems to be he is a sadist.
I'm giving this way too much thought. |
