Also, what the hell is a pre-alpha? Isn't Alpha the earliest stage of game design?

AFAIK Alpha is the earliest PLAYABLE version of the game. Pre-Alpha means that they haven't finished working on the engine, hammering out the art assets, or even deciding how it's going to ultimately be played. A lot of the time the assets you see are mocked-up versions or just placeholders.

Showing pre-alpha footage is mostly just so you can say "Hey, look! This is a thing that shall eventually happen. Start the word-of-mouth train going, and remember your excitement for when you see the name flash by in a news article 3 years from now as it nears release."

On-topic, I'm not much of a pony fan but "Fighting is Magic" is perfection in name form.
