Okay, how about this: what if Shanghai Batman is not Bruce Wayne but a member of Batman Incorporated and they make it into modern-day Shanghai? Would you accept this version of a Batman with magic bat powers if made into a 22 minute animated cartoon show?

It has some pretty bad Frank Miller political stuff in it, too. Also it's not really well drawn by today's standards or like, the standards of the time, either, if you ask me. BUT yeah it's commonly one of his "accepted" pieces.

The other is Batman Year One which doesn't have anything too bad going for it (well, Catwoman is a prostitute, but that's kind of a given with Miller's stuff.) I'd say it's better overall than The Dark Knight Returns because it is a pretty good interpretation of Batman's origin and does most of it right.

I think it's more that Krylo feels like we are pretty saturated with Batman media so if someone has an original idea he'd rather see that then have them shoehorn it into the Batman franchise.

EDIT: And also, like, even the Elseworld's stuff is still meant to be Batman or emblematic of Batman enough that stuff like Red Son, Kingdom Come, still makes sense in using the character in an interesting way.

I dunno, I wouldn't mind having a new interpretation of Batman that's different from the others.

Like, basically my problem with Batman Incorporated is every Batman is still just one dude who goes around punching bad guys and maybe they'll have some gadgets. The closest you get to someone who breaks the mold is Batwing, who at least wears his powered armor all the time instead of when he fights a particularly nasty baddie.

By contrast, Shanghai Batman and seems pretty cool and more interesting and it could give us a different kind of Batman story, as in, more mystical magicky stuff.

But if Krylo's point is really what Nique is saying, then that idea has some merits too.

I will never get why people prefer unique, new, things with the names of old things instead of a completely original new thing that's not forced to nod to the old thing all the time or just plain use elements of the old thing. It'd dumb and people should stop doing it. Except if they want money from the "itz teh gawdayum batman lawl" crowd. Oh wait, that's probably how it is. Silly me. Well never mind, then. Don't even try to do your own thing and go ride that wave forever.

So yeah, maybe this thing is pretty cool (even though I'm not really impressed), maybe it would be better if they didn't use fucking batman.
