Man, that is blatantly GlaDOS, I wonder if Valve can sue for that (they aren't EA so they probably won't jump on it like a shark).

I don't think it really is blatantly GlaDOS.

It sounds the same, but if the character is different, Valve can't sue them for using the same voice actor/robotization technique.

Hrrm. :\

On the one hand, the trailer showed zero Charlie Day, was (hopefully) showing off the slo-mo parts so we could see the robots's designs, and (hopefully) the ponderous "Monsters from portals inside of cracks in the snooore human standupednesszzzzz" voiceover is the extent of the movie's info dump...

On the other hand, I've been burned one too many times. From what I can see, every interaction between the giant figures that presumably make up the core of the movie seems stilted.* I'd be perfectly fine with Idris Elba's** whole "Humans, RAH!" speech being the general tone of the movie's story, but the whole "We made monsters too!" and neural link stuff makes me think it'll tend towards the more psychological, which, meh.

*And not like how Big O-esque "This is what millions of tons of metal mech winding up and careening around" slow-but-forceful looks, more like "Fighting in millions of pounds of invisible molasses" glacial.

**Charlie Hunnam, what accent is that?? They're letting Idris Elba speak in his normal voice, you should speak in yours.

So far, not impressed, but I'll stick with the default of cautiously optimistic.

Well, they signed off on it, so I'd say they wouldn't have a great case.

Although, that was also something that baffled me. Like, I can imagine Del Toro being all "Ooh, it'd be great to have GlaDoS be the voice!", but was there no one around to ask "Why?"

So it is, in fact Ellen McClain?

I thought the similarity was uncanny.

Of course, I dunno if that's good or bad.

On the one hand, it's a fun little thing to recognize in the movie.

On the other hand, if I see the movie, I'm going to be expecting those giant robot suits to flood with neurotoxin every time I hear the AI.

Serious The movie might be OK.

Yes, it is.

Personally, I think that's bad. I will be sorely disappointed whenever I hear her not being sarcastic, sinister, or just plain amusing and entertaining. It will be upsetting to hear my dear GLaDOS reduced to a mere computer voice, no matter how awesome Ellen McClain is.

I will only be mollified if they imply that GLaDOS was just looking for an extra job to pass the time between testing subjects and gassing facilities.

It's the eternal burden of Movie/CG Robot Battles... Sluggish and heavy. I learned to live with it, even though it still saddens me a bit to see it.

i know they do it to be "faithful to physics" and to give "weight" to everything... but quite honestly? You are giving me Rocket Punching Skyscraper-sized robots, i'm Ok with suspension of disbelief at this point.

Default Idris Elba is this movie's Jean Reno

I'm getting some strong American Godzilla vibes from this movie that are turning me off.

I wouldn't have even given a shit about this movie if not for Ellen McLain.

Actually I was leaning more toward the overly Americanized feel of what is a traditionally Japanese genre. I mean, it's still probably not going to be THAT bad but we've been burned before with this sort of thing.
