Agents of Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division
So last season this show was a mind-numbingly mediocre popcorn-bubblegum adventure that only retained my interest based on the barely-there Marvel tie-ins and the subtle yet burning charisma of no. 1 man crush Clark Gregg.
THIS season has started off, relatively, on fire. I don't know if it's actually better, but it's certainly raised the stakes and respected the consequences of it's major silver-screen tie-in (Winter Soldier). Additionally, just in case you had any doubts as to who is pulling the strings on this thing, we're treated to an incredibly depressing sub-plot which twists the proverbial knife into a character that you didn't even know you loved which is a style I think is best characterized as 'whedonesque'. Anyway, for a show that started by bringing a well-loved character back from the dead, they seem to be shaking up the status quo quite a bit. I'm eager to see what else they bring to the table this year.

I enjoyed the first season, but this may be because I marathoned it all over like 3 days, so the weak episodes (of which there were a number at the start) didn't have much time to dissuade me before things got much better, and Winter Soldier fucked everything up.
Also: The second season is really disorientating to me because they skipped so much shit. Like I still don't know where most of the people on their new team came from, or how they got that office building, or really anything that happened during the 'entire winter' they were on the run, and I'm not sure they'll ever explain it. And on most recent episode: Ice dude was shot in the shoulder, potentially missing vitals, froze while sinking (which they used the whole metabolism slowing shit in the first season to save Sky), and no body was found. I'm like 110% sure he's coming back.

It's a show that still has a lot of work to do in order to justify itself I think. I don't really know why they haven't utilized more proper Marvel characters except for thinking that maybe Marvel is being protective of it's IP with the show before it proves itself.
Which if you think about it doesn't really make sense because NOT having proper Marvel-verse characters makes the show have to struggle to prove what is the point of it which makes it kind of this weird self-fulfilling prophecy. Anyway. I guess there is going to be some MCU programs on Netflix which I suppose will tie in to Agents of SHIELD. And Krylo - Yes! They totally skipped a ton of stuff. Like, Skye is kind of a badass now? I guess they weren't really showing her growth as an 'operative' with Ward anyway so just skipping it and saying 'she trained up like a boss now because agent Mae' didn't feel totally jarring until you actually pointed out how much time they skipped. I do think what feels weird in the same vein is how unclear it is what SHIELD's infrastructure actually looks like at this point. It can't JUST be their team, because they reference other assets and stuff? But it seems small, so I don't even really know why they would be doing what they're doing at this point.

I would be quite curious as to which characters would be getting their own series. I heard rumors there might possibly be a Runaways one, which would make up for the Runaways movie not being made following up the Avengers, as initially promised.

Gotham can't even hold Agents of Shield's jock.
Seriously, Marvel IP is not in danger of DC IP generating more interest or even being of better quality at all at this point. Like, Smallville had potential for being a big continuity base but that ship has sailed and now they've fucked it all up by having Arrow (shitty) and Flash (shitty shitty) share continuity, but not Gotham (ULTRA SHIIIIIIT), and none of it meeting up with Man of Steel. ---------- Post added at 01:00 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:58 AM ---------- Like, this isn't even a fanboy thing or whatever - Marvel is just doing shit right.

I'll admit Arrow s1 wasn't great, tho.

Also, aren't you the "DC's characters aren't as good and that's why their movies aren't as good" guy? DC TV>Marvel TV Marvel movies>DC movies. FITE ME!

After a hulu binge, I'll admit that Flash is OK so far, though from my previous sampling of Arrow I still maintain that it's an inferior interpretation of the character and terribly boring.

But I don't think it's the characters being superior or whatever - I think any interesting concept/ character from either IP has potential. I actually would claim to be a bigger DC fan by large in terms of characters, I just think most of the films have missed the point in a lot of ways whereas Marvel studios is avoiding as big of screw ups, though some of that can be attributed to momentum.

As an MCU fanboy I feel like I owe it to myself to give this show another chance, but man the first five episodes of the first season sucked so bad I put it down. I've been meaning to give it another shot soon, but yeah, I'm just going to finish watching Louie first...

I'd strongly recommend watching the second half of season 1 and season 2. Quote:
