Ironically, I always get repped for the posts in which I don't think I deserve it.

We don't allow people to beg for rep, because this ends up being a popularity contest. However, as I am prone to, I like to add it to my sig. (Someday hoping my subliminal message will work...) Others are welcome to, it doesn't hurt anyone and it doesn't clutter up the forums with 'REP ME!!!1!!' spam. In the old days of negative rep, people almost got themselves banned over certain comments made to users through the rep. Also, it's slightly downgrading getting negative rep, and this is a happy happy place. So negative rep won't be making a return. And good LORD B_Real. Not only are you freaking both Shiney and myself out, but must you mention your love for him in every post? (Not only this, but you make Osterbaum confess his hatred every time. Will the rivalries never cease?!)

I'm such a dick. Rep is good. We want to keep the rep. I've actually been repping quite a lot of people lately. Everyone usually deserved it for one thing or a nother.

Or, he's just grumpy. Something. But yeah, Rep is a sorta over-looked thing here, for the most part. It's nice to reward people for cool or funny things, but beyond that, it's not that big of a deal.

Rep is an awesome thing to get from time to time. I love glancing at the little green icon now and then and seeing how the comment has changed. A positive rep even for the SMALLEST reason can really make a person feel good.
I'll even give rep for an avatar that I find to be particularly great. But in all seriousness, neg rep is not something to be doled out lightly. Definitely not if you just don't like someone... that's not cool. If you see someone continuously spamming out useless posts, trolling threads for flamers (not THOSE kind of flamers. Jeez, don't hate.), or whatever, then yeah, pound him/her one with a neg rep. Be sure to include a message as to why.. hopefully something more substantial than "OMGHAX!!one J00 d0n't liek In00y45h4? J00 r teh suck!!11eleven". We're all grown ups. Use a little rep etiquette. Reasons for good rep: 1: Most important! Well-written, well thought-out posts. We come to the forums to be entertained, sure, but many of us also look for intellectually stimulating conversation, even if the poster says something we don't quite agree with. We're all entitled to difference in opinion, and I have given positive rep to people on the opposite side of the argument, just because their posts showed some measure of thought. I just would happen to know that they'd be wrong, but at least they're thinking. 2: To brighten someone's day. Yeah, this isn't the most important reason for a good rep, but it never hurts to offer a kind comment with a bit of encouragement to people. That is often enough to give someone that one little boost they might need for that day. You may not believe it makes a difference, but I can tell you, it sometimes does. 3: A method of thanks. Someone did you a favor, or backed you up in a debate. Show your love, man! 4: A good way to say "You're so cool." Yeah, this ties in with #2 a lot, but this could be about anything... from just something you noticed in someone's sig or avatar, to responding from PMs or what have you. Giving a little self-esteem package is no crime at all. Reasons for bad rep: 1: Blatant disregard of the rules. This is the most viable reason for negrepping someone. I can't believe how close I was to tossing a few badrep points to Bob the Mercenary when he made that flame-thread... figured I might as well before he got himself banned. Then I remembered it was April 1st, and decided to wait and see what happens. Good thing too.... 2: Wehn soem1 deosnt cair 2 maek uh l3jibul p0st. Misspelling is one thing... in moderation. But there is such a thing as proofreading your posts to make sure you don't look like a complete idiot before you put it up for the world... okay... the forum to see. Granted, your ideas and thoughts might still make you look like a dolt, but at least you'll show yourself capable of basic communication. That pretty much covers the neg rep section. Do remember in all instances, whether giving or knocking points, to include some sort of feasible reason in the message box. That way, the recipient knows what you approved or disliked. Me? I get surprized pleasantly when I go off on a random rant, then log on the next day and see a rep message saying something to the effect of "Right on, dude! Tell it like it is!" It's a great feeling, even if rep might have been the farthest thing from my mind at the initial point.

I like rep. Rep makes me feel good. I only seem to think that people who:
A. Post somthing really funny. B. Make a helpfull addition to the forums. (With mod approval that is.) C. Go out of there way to help someone, ie, make their avatar...*cough* Get rep. I also very rarely give rep but when i do i go trigger happy with it. Somtimes i like giveing lots of rep, somtimes i don't. Fun fact: Please stop repping me for my avatar....it's happened THREE times now... Edit: >.< DAMMIT OSTERBUAM! Last edited by Patrat; 06-13-2005 at 05:54 AM. |

Yeah, shadows, quit praising your love for me all the time. That's just beyond weird.
As far as rep goes, I didn't think a useless add-on like that would generate so many posts in the space of one day. Rep is basically nothing more than say, a disco ball. It's neat to have and it looks pretty, but it doesn't do anything worthwhile.
