I'm finding myself incapable of taking this guy seriously.

Maybe it's Jack Thompson's fault. Maybe it's even his plan. To desensitize us all to raving anti-game politicians, so that the more competent ones could move against us unopposed. The Lawyer [boy] Who Cried Indecency [wolf], if you will.

Starting with the disgusting idea that one can "create" their own versions of what people look like, removing warts, moles, and bald spots while enhancing - shall we say - the extended features of the game's characters tends to objectify women, sex, and human relationships. Right? We can all agree on this?
Um... what? Since when is it news that most games nowadays have a character creation feature? Hell, you could do it in tabletop RPG's, for chrissakes! And Mass Effect was marketed as an in depth game where your choices decided the outcome of the game; and as a game that in depth, where it sounds like character development is a big thing, why not be able to make your own character?

I bet this guy is just mad because he's not able to perfectly recreate his "warts, noles, and bald spots" to fully experience hot, sweaty, blue, alien sex.

Quote:
Then there's the dishonesty behind the game' title. "Mass Effect" sounds like a war game with a deadly virus that is spreading unless the GI-Joes are able to defeat the evil and deadly substance and it's covert war plan. By it's design, kids could ask for it, or for their parents' Best Buy Card to go purchase it with nary a raised eye-brow. Generic, non-descriptive, and relatively harmless.
...So he's ripping on the title? Look - aren't adults always the ones who say "Don't judge a book by its cover?" This isn't a measure of, y'know, kids deceiving their parents in order to get this game. It's well known that one of the biggest reasons that kids get their hands on games rated for a more mature audience is that their parents don't read the ratings on said games!

This article and it's call for censorship is unwarranted, I found the game less offensive then the little mermaid - I mean half fish half human whats that teaching our children!

heh, I'm so glad this is what fuels the political fires.

The only reason this sort of work is powerful is becausxe people pay attention to it. Believe it? Who cares, it is widely read and widely known. It's the same thing as why terrorism works - you do it, people get talking, the more loud or stupid among them get scared and make a fuss, all of a sudden here comes the patriot act.

I'm just kinda wondering how people can write things like that and not get sued for slander. It's like offering Bioware free money.

I'd prefer to call it an "intimate scene".

Yes, it displays sex. It's not even implied; you see it happening.

What separates it from the sexscenes in modern, and even more so in older, movies is that it's done tastefully. It isn't tits everywhere and a lot of screaming, squeeling, "OH GOD YES YOU'RE SO GOOD" and cigarettes afterwards.

It's an intimate moment you're witnessing. Making love rather than sex.
Was I missing out on something? 'Cause all I ever saw was the whole Consort scene, which is so non-graphic that it's more implied than actually shown.

Anyway.

This guy makes Jack Thompson look like the Paragon of Logic.

Tomorrow, if I have the time, I'm going to dissect his entire column, and point out everything that is wrong with it, on a sentence by sentence basis.

Another article of his.

I mean, seriously, this is so damn stupid that I suspect this is a publicity stunt.

EDIT: And apparently, he published that article after that comic.

This guy's just really provoking (or in a sense, being a "troll") the entire gaming community rather blatantly by referring his target readers as "gamer-nerds" and basically grabbing the insults he's recieved via e-mail and shoving it in everyone's faces and seems to be having a fun time while doing so.

In a nutshell, this guy's acting just like a harmonal 11-year-old boy who likes to piss people off over the internet, but with a bigger vocabulary.
