Okay, so I've gotten some newer, more refined design sketches done for most of my characters, and I'd like some feedback on them from a design point of view. I hold no hope for anatomy. :gonk:
At any rate, anything with a "15" should really be "1.5" and "20" should be "2.0" because Photobucket doesn't support periods. They indicate either small tweaks to the design or huge overhauls over the previous version, respectively. Anything not marked is my initial sketch. I realize that quality is inconsistent at best, but please bear with me. http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...gn%20Sketches/

I got this random mental image during school...A medieval knight, classic plate mail, sword, and shield, fighting a dragon.
Except he has a chainsaw. |

This was meant to be an awesome rendition/desktop background of the hammer of dawn from GoW (or other satellite based laser weaponry of awesomeness) levelling the shit out of a building.
But I kinda gave up after a while, because its a lot of work and I didn't do enough on the outline and I'm tired. Might go back to it, I dunno. I was trying out a landscape since I've never really done one before. I call it Hammer of Fail. |

Early sketch of Belts, my obligatory Stereotyped RPG Protagonist/Source for Zelda shoutouts. Really, I think I've revised this one character image more times than anyone else in my comic; I have a rough idea of what I want to do with him, but the specifics keep changing. I originally thought of him as made entirely of belts and crazy hair--like, some sort of belt-and-buckle-mummy. I changed that to having his arm be entirely made of belts, with the rest of him being based vaguely on Link if he were in Kingdom Hearts. His hair's also changed dramatically from just being crazy to spiralling around him to being some sort of dragon. He may or may not have a scarf later, I just don't know. I want him to be a play on RPG heroes and a little bit Link (my other characters are a little bit old cliche, a little bit specific Nintendo characters as well), but it's hard to come up with hair that's just goofy enough. I'm also still working on making his face more anime-iiiish. I already draw tiny anime mouths, so trying to emphasize that Belts looks more like an anime character than the rest of the cast should is a tad difficult. He'd probably be in the damn comic already if I could decide what he's going to look like. I've been doomed to just semi-sorta-show him hence far. Ah, well. Not pictured: An oversized potato peeler. |

Hehe. That's a neat idea, and a good drawing. I love your art style.
And, good news, I'm out of my art funk finally. Not that this is particularly good, but I WANT to draw now. |

Fortune Zero, they're not belts if they aren't a few buckles. What you have are bandages. And a scarf is unnecessary when the guy has a dragon for hair.

Yeah, I got hella lazy in that particular sketch. I make sure to bring the buckle action for his official semi-appearances, though.

TDK, your problem with that lancape shot is you don't have a single vanishing point for perspective. It's sort of receding away in multiple directions.
Hee, I like Belts. He's just absurd enough that its awesome. Is... is that a giant zipper for a belt buckle? Oh, I've been meaning to ask what people use to draw. I've mainly been working out of an old notebook I had lying around, since I want to get a little better before trying anything more serious. When you scan things in and work on them further, what do you use to clean them up? Or what program do you use when working on the computer in general? Just asking since I cleaned up a random doodle of an evil flower for a certain RP I am running in a... somewhat involved way. Before! After! That was using my "awesome Paint skills". I just pasted it into a 16 colour bitmap to simplify the colours, changed the shade of grey it ended up as to black and edited the notepad lines out and filled in the lines lost by hand. Problem is the lines aren't quite as nice, because it's just black and white. Oh, I just realised I forgot to put up that corrected Arhra sketch of before. No more freakish elbows and a slightly better stance! I've been meaning to ask people about how they get inspiration for what to draw? I tend to have trouble myself. I've mainly done a few tests of perspective and a little concept doodling from a few active RP's I'm in. For example, (now reasonably old) head perspective tests! They're actually older than that first sketch I put up >> << A reasonably bad doodle of some kind of cycloptic crab-spider that probably directs things. I wonder what RP that might be from... Rough concept doodle of some kind of magical girl? Hmmm... Arhra, vaguely evil sorceress edition concepts! What was I thinking making five Arhras in Avvy? Now I think I'm starting to get basic anatomy down and some level of repeatability, next step is going to be some slightly more dynamic poses.
