I'm fully aware that stereotypes are based on truths. The thing is, you can use stereotypes to your advantage when interacting with people you don't know, but you use them because you're ignorant of the actual individual's personality. When you start defining people by them, like by saying something along the lines of "old people are either this, this, or this," then instead of using them to your advantage, you're using them to avoid actually learning about the individual, perpetuating your own ignorance. And you turn them from individuals, into a faceless group.

My definition would be more along the lines of "People who previously lived in Africa, but now live in America." Nobody calls me a Euro-American or German-American. And what about white people born and raised in Africa, but then eventually move to America?

Being politically correct is almost as bad as stereotyping, I say. I know some kick-ass old people. They got history and wisdom and such. I also have two really cranky old neighbors that I wish I could push off a bridge. Not because they are stereotypical cranky old people, but because they are cranky people.

Being politically correct is getting upset when someone uses the word "old" and telling them to refer to the elderly as "age challenged." Being respectful of your fellow man, is not saying "hey, you're old; which do you hate more: skateboards, or angry music?"

And just to give an example for my earlier statement:

Positive use of sterotypes: "Maybe I shouldn't make jokes about the slave trade to my dark skinned friend. He might be alright with it, but I don't actually know him that well. Better to err on the side of caution."

Negative use: "Hey, Gerome; yeah you. How many rap albums do you own? Can I see your gun?"

See, the difference with white people is that it's harder to tell where they came from. There are such terms as Irish American and such, but it's harder to look at someone and say, "man, he's got French skin there." With African Americans, you can't even boil it down past a fucking continent. It's not like you call them "Zimbabwean Americans" or anything. But yes, you can go by continent. That's why we have African American, Asian American, and Native American, and yes, even European American in our language.

I'm just going to say saying "You racist bastard" seems a bit unkind for NPF... I dunno, I'm drunk, but the joke kinda didn't occur to me until I stared writing this. I wouldn't want new members to think that's how we roll, you know?

Also, I'm glad we're in general, so that I can say that pushing a guy who wasn't gonna do it is sort of okay. Hopefully, Mr. Suicide learned to appreciate his life more.

Edit: In response to bluestarultor, I called myself European American a couple times in High school. No one seems to care where you're from at my college unless you're East Asian.
