Hmm a little Ninja Warrior-esque obstacle course with death pits and the like doesn't seem like a bad idea. Instead of just straight jumping from block to block, it could involve long jumps to reach ladders that are just above lava pits or something like that. Or maybe swimming against a heavy current that is just on the edge of a death pit. Or maybe if you're actually able to pull of a flowing lava trap, you could have a room filled with that Nether block type that makes you move really slowly and you're supposed to race to the end of the room while either avoiding flowing lava or maybe the room being filled with water causing you to drown.

And as far as insta-kill, 2 block deep lava pits are as good as anything seeing as you're pretty much dead from that point on anyway.

EDIT: If you had the resources, 3x3 block deathmatch arena against a creeper spawner would be fun to watch too.

A dirt scaffold/stairs is easier, actually.
Far more temporary than a cobblestone scaffold.

The server is lagging like a crazy person. Is there any chance that sometime we could do a map reset to a size-controlled map to prevent it from overgrowing?

Has he added sized maps? I don't think he has.
