Dictation software?

I don't type a lot. Mostly because it takes forever to get some idea of what I want to say in my head, and even moreso to get it typed out.

So, I was thinking if there's any dictation software out there. I do know of Dragon's Naturally Speaking, but holy crap that's expensive.

Just to clarify, I'm talking about software where you speak into a microphone and the program types what you say in the computer.

Preferably freeware, but I'm open to anything.

Speech to text/Dictation software is very hard to come by and VERY hard to code. What with the thousands upon thousands of variations in the way people talk. even with good dictation software it's going to misinterpret a lot and will usually take 30 minutes to adjust to your voice.

Typing is the really the Only Smart Legal way to do it. Just use Audacity to record your thoughts and type them later.

Windows vista and 7 have some speech to text software, it's under the "voice recognition" (or something like that) option. Just type it into the start menu search box. Other than that, I haven't really looked into STT software :/

Typing. Its easier.

It might not be accurate, but just like babelfish, it's fun to see the results :3

I didn't seem to have much trouble when I tried to use it, I didn't try to speak in english though. Also, I think the program has some sort of "training" thing, but yeah, typing is a lot easier.

I have Windows XP. There's supposedly something similar in XP but I'm not sure it's there.

I know about accuracy problems and whatnot, but I still feel I'd get better results from Speech-to-text/dictation than anything else. I'd like to try, at least.

Then unfortunately, I'm going to say that it's not very easy. While it slowly learning how I really do talk. I have to say every punctuation mark and more to actually get the point across

The only way to get it for free, would not be legal.

There was a free version of Viavoice released a fair while ago- Viavoice was the Dragon of its day but got bought out, and when they were bought out the free version went poof. Any attempt of mine to find it fell short but you might have better luck. (And if you do, share please )
