Default Just talking about Star Trek

First off, some sillyness.

Anyway, as much of a Star Wars fangirl that I am, I do enjoy Star Trek as well. I haven't seen too much of the remastered TOS, but I did find the origional quite entertaining. Next Gen has gotten played to death, so it's kind of become vanilla to me. DS9 was my favorite in my opinion, mostly because of the non-Federation characters. Voyager, it had it's moments, but after season 4 it lost something and wasn't really able to get it back until the end of the final season. And finally, Enterprise HAD a lot of potental, but they just did not capitalize on it. I just wish instead of having the Xindi crisis, they decided to get into the Romulian/Federation war.

And I just let my STO account expire four days ago.

I'll probably restart it when the next featured episode series drops, though. And I guess pay Cryptic to give me a respec to go back to my cruiser. My experimental BoP build was interesting on paper, but in practice I preferred how much more of a pounding my Marauder could take.

Default I'm completely in love with Star Trek so I get on a soap box about it at times. Sorry

If someone can tell me how STO overcomes the futility of the same-ol' MMO grind-quest-repeat I might be convinced to play it.

To have any kind of scifi geek street cred you pretty much have to love DS9. Luckily, it actually does contain the best material of any Trek more frequently than any of the other shows were able to manage. Though IIRC there is SUM CONTENTION among Trek specific communities as well as Berman & co. about it, though I think this is in reality a vocal minority complaining about it being so different when it actually had a healthy relationship with the other programs as far as continuity. DS9 also balanced it's grand story lines with great respect to what had been established before - see 'Trials and Tribblations' if you don't believe me!

The only potential it really had was on paper in EARLY pre-production. People flipped a little about a prequel show that would inevitably contradict, in an implicit way, elements that were established in the TOS run, but it tied in well with the TNG film 'First Contact' and was overall an interesting and different-y idea.

That potential was lost when they started getting to entire wars and a central theme of time travel, apparently, which all should have been Federation History 101 and mentioned quite a lot in the other series but weren't, in addition to some of the messages about race, good sense, sexuality and gender that, intentional or not, was a slap in the face to what the franchise had grown into.

IMO Enterprise had an amazing Fourth season with some of the best episodes of the entire franchise present. But it was what the entire series should have been - Establishing the Federation. Action & exploration mixed with story arcs of political intrigue.

Exactly. You can really drop the entire third season and not really miss anything important.

And if they developed a sixth series, what era would you like to see it put in? I personally would like to see what all goes on with the Enterprise-B or C, seeing as both of them togeather have what, 1 1/2 hours of screentime or something?

I liked Space Cases as a kid so part of me wouldn't mind a Starfleet Academy series. It seems like the kind of setting that could use and work the bugs out of the franchise's fictional history. Also it puts the viewer closer to some of the politics of the Federation and maybe even Section 31.

I think another prequel would be a mistake, but I do like the idea of following the famed Enterprise ships since they're all supposed to be so damn impressive.

Now, Star Trek Online takes place in 2415 or something, right? I'm sure that a video game would never serve as the basis for canon, but it feels right to move the series forward literally. Even just for practical purposes, it would make people interested in what happens next. So, another Starship series set some time after Voyager could be fun. Hell, it would even be an opportunity to bring back some of the actors from TNG, DS9, and VOY. I sure wouldn't mind seeing Jonathan Frakes on screen again, maybe captaining the Titan as Riker.

Long story short, it doesn't. But it does do a pretty good job of presenting a narrative with a good portion of the quest grind, particularly on the Federation side. The Klingons have far less in the way of such story missions, but what they do have are particularly badass. Like "journey with the clone of Emperor Kahless in Grethor and battle Fek'lhr himself" badass.

Also, the space combat is pretty rad, and they've revamped ground combat recently to not be completely dull. I'd recommend trying it out if they ever went free-to-play, but in the meantime all I can say is that about two months of game time is really all you need to experience everything interesting about it, anyway.

Yeah, I was honestly quite surprised at how legitimately good the last season of Enterprise was. Shame it was just too little, too late.

Also, Jeffrey Combs needs to basically be in everything ever.

Man I knew I was forgetting something in my rant about what was awesome in DS9. Weyoun. I just love his reaction to being poisoned by the Cardassians. Also Weyoun 7(8?) traveling with Odo is one of my favourite bottle episodes in anything ever (and I like bottle episodes).
