The revolution will be memed!

And that sort of stuff is really easy to say when the joke isn't directed at a group you're part of, or it is but that group is not largely oppressed in society.

Yes yes, same old song and dance, honestly. Louis CK has jokes directed at a group I'm a part of, and they don't offend me because their delivery is superb. You seriously don't have any right to be offended at the slightest mention of something vaguely related to a trauma or pressure you may or may not have experienced in your life. We all have god damn trauma somewhere. Take life less seriously, and laugh. Again, this is a gratient, but I haven't heard a specific example or link in this thread, yet, to anything I consider crossing some obvious inappropriate boundary. I didn't watch the Dane Cook thing though, because he tends to be unfunny and doesn't deserve my bandwidth. Actually I have only watched the OP video. If you want me to review any though, point them out for me and I'll let you know when my Oh-No-You-Didn't Alarm goes off.

It was a bad joke because it was mocking a very real and horrific tragedy, not because of the beats of the joke or the setup. Topic matters. There is such a thing as a topic that ought not be made light of. |

I can't help but be amused when people talk about mainstream stand-up comedians and refer to them as "edgy." Perhaps its just the crowd I hang with, but when I think "edgy," I think "performance art wherein the artist performs autocannibalism as a metaphorical stand against the institution of marriage," not a smug white guy standing on a stage and saying "Fried Chicken, amirite?"
There is a difference between being a moron who acts controversial for the sake of being controversial and someone who purposely breaks social mores for the express reason of making an argument. most "edgy" humor isn't, its just someone trying to make themselves memorable by doing something unexpected, whereas proper comedians who use such topics (carlin et al) do it specifically to make you think of things in a different light. |

Okay I watched more of the CK and Carlin stuff, except for the Daily Show interview because I apparently can't in Canada, and as far as I'm concerned, all kosher, nor have I been given any argument to the contrary besides people having the polar opposite opinion of my own. And we just kind of stand there, with our arms crossed, brows furrowed.
E: Also, CK and Carlin appear to argue my side better than I can. Oh well, guess that's part of the reason why they are/were on stages and have/had millions of dollars. Last edited by Azisien; 07-30-2012 at 08:37 PM. |

Are you just not reading the things i post, or is there a reason as to why you keep missing the mark of what i actually said by a mile and a half while at the same time trying to "correct me" by repeating nearly verbatim the stuff i already said myself before? It's starting to become uncanny |

Oh man, a thread about edgy comedy! that sounds totally ballin!! Let's just see wh-
.... WOW that got terrible fast. Hey Magus, rape jokes aren't edgy. They aren't funny. There are VERY FEW EXCEPTIONS They will never be funny. How can you even fucking think that linking to something like those are okay. THEY WILL NEVER BE FUCKING OKAY. RAPE ISN'T FUNNY. It's a terrible fucking tragedy that should never fucking happen to anyone. They are TRAUMATIZING, NIGHTMARISH EXPERIENCE THAT NEVER LEAVE. Just because a fucking comedian is funny doesn't mean they're excused either. They're fucking terrible for making those jokes. Like, holy shit people. How can this EVER BE VIEWED AS HUMOROUS.

Holy shit, how did I not see this thread until now? What's this, George Carlin and Louis CK making rape jokes where the victims are the butt of the jokes?
WHAT THE FUCK NPF. There is nothing edgy about recycling rape jokes that have been floating around for ages that do nothing to enlighten the nature of rape. You know what's edgy? Pointing out how rape is a reality that people have to face every day. Rape is funny? Fuck you. You know how many times I've been followed home by men before? You know how many times I've been groped and harassed on public transportation? You know how many customers I dealt with who stared at my tits and ass every time they came in for a cup of coffee? Worse, how I've been stalked by customers? You know how my fucking underwear has been stolen in my own goddamn apartment complex by a neighbour who was also stalking me? You know how how many women I know who have been raped, and FUCKING BLAMED FOR IT because a few of them were at a club? Do you fucking know what it's like to live knowing that there's a 20% chance that I will be raped? Do you know what it's like to have to be hyper vigilant so I can do my best to make sure I am not raped? FUCK RAPE JOKES. FUCK LOUIS CK AND GEORGE CARLIN. THEY ARE NOT EDGY, JUST OFFENSIVE. THERE IS NOTHING EDGY ABOUT REINFORCING THE STATUS QUO. t(' ' t) IF YOU WANT TO BE EDGY, THEN INFORM PEOPLE ABOUT HOW RAPE IS A REAL THING THAT HAPPENS AND VICTIMS ARE NOT TO BLAME.
