I really liked the one book of these that I read (White Night, I think), and it was pretty accessible so it seems like you don't really have to read them all, BUT, since I'm kind of obsessive about reading every book in a series, I've kind of been waiting until he writes all 20 (I think he said there were going to be only 20?) so I know exactly how many books I'm going to have to buy if I really get into this series.

You do realize that it'll be like 2019 before he finishes the series, right? At the earliest.

Dresden Files is probably my favorite work of modern fantasy out there at the moment, its one of the best balances of pulp shenanigans and clever writing I've seen. I would highly recommend picking up most of the series (the first book and maybe the second can be skipped because they aren't as relevant to the overarching plot, and aren't nearly as well written) specifically because while most of the books are episodic enough that you can pick them up and read them without prior experience, there is an overall metaplot through the books that becomes increasingly important to understand with each passing release.
