Something that does suck about Steam is the fact that so many people that bought a legit copy of half-life/CS can't use their CD key, and they have to go through a ton of hassle (and possibly expense) or simply buy a new copy just to play. Thankfully I did not have that problem. For anyone with this problem, go to Wal-Mart, they have the original half-life for $14. Everywhere else is selling that platinum crap that is $49.99 because it comes with a couple mods that are freeware.
...you don't need to buy HL again to get on Steam.

Install HL, run it, enter your CD key. Download steam, run steam, convert your files to the steam cache. Boom, done.

This is actually a pretty large problem for the CS community right now. Copying the files over you must re-enter your CD key in steam. Was it not always like that? I know for sure Steam asks for your HL CD key after it copies the files, and it will not allow you to play if the CD key is invalid (despite having the files copied over). And for whatever reason, many valid CD keys don't actually work and need to be reset. The transfer has been pretty messy, they still have a lot of things to work out.

I think they should just reset Steam. Because they've had loads of people saying their CD key don't work (Way over the 1000's). they should just set the whole entire thing, all the CD keys wiped from the system

Psymon: But if the CD keys aren't working now with it as it is, it makes one wonder if they'd work upon reset? Chances are they'd reset it and have everyone still complaining that their CD key doesn't work and now all those with working ones having to go through all the trouble of re-entering them, etc...

It must be some sort of problem with Steam's database, but unless they know what the exact problem is, not sure how they'd go about fixing it.

Unfortunately this would not resolve the issue. One of the main problems with the serial number is that brand new, never before purchased CD keys are already registered with Steam. This is because there used to be many sites dedicating to generating and passing around CD keys, so a lot of people with legit serials have about 5000 other people using that same serial. It just never mattered before because WON didn't care. Then steam arrived, and a lot of people with ill-gotten CD keys went and registered them, leaving the people who actually purchased it, high and dry. If steam were to be completely reset, people with illegit CD keys would still in some instances manage to register before the people who actually paid for it. The only solution is to send in proof of your purchase to Steam and have them reset it, 1 by 1 ;/

(That or just buy a new one.)

Steam never, EVER asked me for my HL CD key. Ever.

No. I own a legit copy of Half Life. After installing it and entering the CD key pre-steam, I'm not asked to enter it again after converting it over to Steam. I've installed HL 3 times like this, and haven't had to give my CD key to steam, ever.

Do you install it in it's own folder like (D:\steam) or in the half life folder like (D:\serria\steam)?
