it's basically just having random things happen in someones favor with no hints leading up to it, due to the fact that many greek plays had endings featuring dues ex machina stuff

To clear things up that device has a grand total of 4 uses, per game, and is basically a dodge. It requires a fairly complex set of buttons and thus requires I have extened fore knowledge of the event to happen. It won't save me from a sword slash, or other close range attack, but an annouced sniping is pretty easy to prepare for.

Have you ever seen the Hudsucker Proxy?

HUDSUCKER PROXY SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Towards the end, when the guy falls out of the window...and the janitor stops time by shoving a broom into the clock gears, and Mr. Hudsucker comes down, explains everything, and tells how to make everything alright...that's deus ex machina.

Of course...if you have never seen it, that doesn't really help, but it's the only thing I could think of.
